The original log cabin were Mr. Smith was born was located on the meadow, near the west branch of the White River, and there were only two or three families in Bethel at the time. On acount of the depredations of teh Indians, there was a general feeling of alarm throughout the country. It was increased by the burning of Royalton about this time, and Deacon Dudley Chase came to Bethel to take his daughter home with to Cornish, N.H., till the danger should be past. There were no roads in those days, and it would have been necceary for her to ride on horse-back behind her father on a pillion, which she was in no conditin to do. After the birth of her son, however, she was taken about four miles to the fort at the mouth of the first branch, and remained there for some time. Lois CHASE and Benjamin SMITH were married in 1779.7 Benjamin SMITH was born on 6 Dec 1753 in Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire.10,20 He died on 12 Oct 1822 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.10,21 He was buried in Old Church Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.19 The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Volume 90, p. 241. Benjamin Smith enlisted, 1775, in Captain Moseley's company, Colonel Durkee's regiment, Connecticut troops, and, 1776 - 77, served in Captain Brown's company. He was engaged in the battles of Bunker Hill, Harlem, and Trenton. In 1818, he applied for a pension. His claim was allowed. He was born in Pomfret, Conn.; died in Bethel, Vt. Came to Bethel, Vt., in the early part of 1780, and settled on the farm (then a wilderness) now occupied by Squire Bowen on the Randolph road. When the town was settled Deacon Dudly Chase, one of the original proprietors gave to his eldest son, Simeon, and his two daughters, Alice and Lois respectively, three farms adjoining, this being one of them. Benjamin Smith carried on this farm until his death, which occured September 12, 1822. There were twelve children born of this marriage. He graduated in 1791 from Dartmouth College, and read law with Hon. Lot Hall, at Westminster, Vt. he commenced the practice of is profession at Randolph, which was his home thereafter; here he won merited honors, and here he died. He was probably the first lawyer in Randolph. He was State Attorney for Orange County from 1803 to 1811. He ws United States Senator from Veront from 1813 to 1817; at this time he was elected a Judge of the Supreme Court of Vermont, and resinged his position as Senator to accept the new office. this he held by successive elections, till 1821. His town again sent hime to the General Assembly in 1823 and 1824. This last Legislature re-elected Mr. Chase to the United States Senate, where he served his State till 1831. Judge Chase was a man of fine presence and courtly manners. He married Olivia Brown, they had no children, but educated and reared a large family, probably 15, mainly nephews and neices. Judge Chase was a strong man, mentally and physically and left a deep impress on the community in which he lived. He died at his Randolph home, twenty-seven days after the death of his beloved wife. His younger brother, Philander, was Bishop of Ohio and Illinois; his nephew, hon. Salmon P. Chase, was Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of teh United States Supreme Court. He worked on the farm with his father until the death of the latter, when he took the farm and carried on the same, taking car of his mother, several of his brothers and sisters having already moved to other parts of teh country, and the others following with the following exceptions; Jehosheba, who lived and died in the old home; Olivia, who spent the most of her life in Bethel; and Daniel Corbett, who always lived in this vicinity, and died in West Randolph. He was the first child born in Bethel, Vt. Asa Smith was a prominent member of the Episcopal Church his father having been one of the founders of Christ Chuch, the firse edifice, now called Old Christ Church, being located about three and one-half miles northwest of the village, on the Randolph road, near the three Chase farms. Asa Smith died on the same farm he was born on. Soon after his birth he was brought by his mother to Vermont, and his early childhood was sepent with his uncle the Hon. Dudley Chase, at Randolph. His uncle superintended his education, and in the year 1815 he was a student at Yale College. He wrote sometimes for periodicals. He lived in the house next north of the bank for a shor time, and went away from Bethel as early as 1824. George CHASE and Eliza GROVER were married on 22 Jul 1821.35 Eliza GROVER was born.
