Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976. p. 214 - 217. Rufus Martin, eldest son of Gideon Martin of Randolph, purchased of Dudley Chase, the main proprietor of Rochester, lot #8 in the 6th range of the 2nd Division for 100 on March 20, 1800. Rufus was probably a veteran of the War of 1812, as there is a Rufus S. Martin listed. Rufus went early into Little Hollow to settle. He was the second settler there and built the first frame house drawing some of he lumber and the bricks from the fireplace and chimney over two mountian ranges from Orwell and Brandon, with Oxen. He is lsited in the vermont Census of 1800 as residing in Bethel. This is an error. The Bethel town line is only a short distance from the Rochester line and census takers of those days were not always aware of town boundaries. He is listed as a head of family with two children. Rufus Martin an dhis wife, Abigail Brown, were neighors in Windham, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Martin) Brown. Family tradition is that they were cousins. Eight children were born to them in Rochester, Vermont. As a boy Rufus was greatly interested in woodworking and pestered his father to buy him a turning lathe. Whether he did or did not is not known, but somehow he did secure a hand lathe. Some time after he had settled in Little Hollow he built a small water power mill just below the jnction of Cemetery and Mountain brooks about were Webster's pond is now located. He evidently had a saw of some sort also, is now located. he evidently had a saw of some sort also. Rufus became quite skilled in the manufacture of furniture. Some of it is still in existence, for Burton Flint of Randolph a descendant, has a beautiful candle stand with hand turned legs, a similar drop leaf table and an old cherry chest. He also has two ladder back chairs, and a rocker with the seats woven from brown or swamp ash strips. This swamp ash was thoroughly soaked in water for several days. It was then pounded to loosen the growth layers of wood wich whould then peel off in strips. The strips were again soaked in water and woven into the chair seat. When dried out the seat was solid. Rufus MARTIN and Abigail BROWN were married.5,6 Abigail BROWN (daughter of Henry BROWN and Sarah MARTIN) was born on 16 Sep 1769.7 She died on 29 Aug 1827 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.8 She was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.4,9 Rufus MARTIN and Abigail BROWN had the following children: +2 i.
