Sixth Generation 19. Gardner SPOONER (Gardner-5, Isaac-4, William-3, John-2, William-1) was born in 1776 in Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont.1 He died on 12 Apr 1844 in Ripton, Addison, Vermont.7,15 He was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.16 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. On March 13, 1823, he purchased part of Lot #1 in the ninth range east of the river in the town of Rochester, and on September 16, 1824, and again in 1834 he bought on a total of 150 acres more. He continued to clear and farm this land until he died of a sudden case of pneumonia in 1844. Gardner married Martha Fisher and to them were born ten children. Among them was Alden, born in 1819. The name "Alden" comes from the John and Priscilla Alden family from whic members of this family are descendants. He was a devoted worker in the Gilead Church and often served as a lay preacher in both Gilead and Rochester Hollow. He had a natural talent for writing poems and blank vere. Included in this volume are two of these. Laurel B. SPOONER and Emma KENDALL were married on 23 Nov 1910.22 Emma KENDALL was born on 8 Mar 1892.22 Laurel B. SPOONER and Emma KENDALL had the following children: 49 i. Burton W. SPOONER was born on 2 Jun 1912.22 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 197. of Randolph Center, is still devoted to the old Gilead Churuch and has watched over it and kept it in repair. He jacked up the church after the '27 flood, and installed supporing posts where the church hans over the caved-off bank. Over the years he has reroofed and painted the old edifice. In 1971, Burton W., and the writer built a new front platform which was completed just before the Gilead Old Home Day was held on Saturday, October 2, 1971. Raymond Smith and son, Raymond Smith, Jr., sawed out and donated the lumber. Burton W. Spooner has served as selectman of the Town of Randolph and is presently serving as Side Judge of Orange County. 50 ii. Merlin R.
