John BRADFORD was born about 1767.1 He died on 19 Nov 1814 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.2 He was buried in East Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.3 John BRADFORD and Lucy BROOKS were married.4-6 Lucy BROOKS was born in 1771.1 She died on 9 Nov 1818 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.2 She was buried in East Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.3 John BRADFORD and Lucy BROOKS had the following children: 2 i. Lucy BRADFORD was born about 1800.1 She died on 9 Dec 1818 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.2 She was buried in East Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.3 3 ii. Dr. Philander D. BRADFORD was born on 9 Apr 1811 in Randolph, Orange, Vermont.7,8 He died on 16 Jan 1892 in Northfield, Washington, Vermont.7,9 The Illustrated Historical Souvenir of Bethel, Vermont. Complied and Arranged by Fred Cox. Bethel, Vermont. 1895. p. 35. He received his education in the Orange County Grammar School, and was graduated from the Woodstock Medical School in the class of 1834. He first practiced at Braintree and afterwards moved to Randolph, where he had an office for some time. He came to Bethel late in the forties but moved from her to Northfield in 1854 where he resided until his death. He was an acitve, energetic man, and although an excellent physician and devoted to his profession, he found time to devote to the affairs of his country. He was a strong "Abolitionist," and an active worker in the Free Soil Party of Vermont at a time when far from popular. It was enough for him that he believed the principles of his party to be founded on right and justice. He was elected to several public offices of the State, filling the same faithfully. Illustrated Historical Souvenier of Randolph, Vermont, Compiled & Published by Nickenson & Cox, Published Randolph, Vermont 1895, p. 49. Educated at Orange County Grammar School and Woodstock Medical School, graduating in 1834, was an active, stirring man of affairs both in and out of his profession. He practiced in Braintree, Randolph and Bethel from 1834 to 1854, when he removed to Northfield for the remainder of his life, which closed July 16, 1892. Although he was an excellent physician, he will, perhaps, be longer remembered for his active work in connection with the Free-soil party of Vermont, when its name was a reproach. It was enough for him that he believed the principles of the party to be founder in right and justice. He stood manfully by the cause of human freedom and lived to see the hated "abolitionist" respected, even by those whose slaves he had helped to emancipate. He served the State and society, faithfully and to their advantage in many public offices. Sources 1. Bethel Vermont Cemetery Records, 1792 - 1919, 89 leaves, records arranged alphabetically.
