    2. First Generation 1. William SPOONER was born in 1622 in Colchester, Essex, England.1 He died in Mar 1684 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.2 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 196. William Spooner, the first of this family to settle in America. It cannot be definitely ascertained wheter he first settled in Massachusetts Bay Colony or Plymouth Colony. His name is first found on record in 1637 in the records of Plymouth Colony. In 1653, he took the oath as a freeman and the next year was appointed surveyor of highways in New Plymouth, and was also a member of the militia. Later he moved to Acushnet and served as a town officer there. He lived the remainder of his life in Acushnet. William SPOONER and Elizabeth PARTRIDGE were married.3 Elizabeth PARTRIDGE was born. William SPOONER and Elizabeth PARTRIDGE had the following children: +2 i. John SPOONER, born in 1644, Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts1. He was by profession a Physician, but was much engaged in the public affairs of the State. He was Judge of the Supreme Court, and also Lieutenant-Governor of Vermont. He was a distinguished patriot during the Revolutionary War. In 1782, Dr. Spooner became Lt. Governor of the State of Vermont, to which office he was annually elected until 1787. Dr. Spooner prsided over the committee selected to consider the granting of a charter to the town of Randolph in 1780. It was then called Middlesex. The committee unanimosly recommended that the charter be granted, which was done June 29, 1781. Dr. Paul S. SPOONER and Asenath WRIGHT were married in 1769.8 Asenath WRIGHT (daughter of Amasa WRIGHT) died before 1777.8 The Cogswells in America, by E. O. SPOONER and Asenath WRIGHT had the following children: 16 i. Elizabeth SPOONER was born on 22 Dec 1770 in Hartland, Windsor, Vermont.2,12 She died on 24 Feb 1853.6,12 17 ii. Paul SPOONER was born on 19 Sep 1772 in Hartland, Windsor, Vermont.2,8 18 iii. Amasa SPOONER was born on 11 Dec 1774 in Hartland, Windsor, Vermont.2,8 Dr. Paul S. No children from this marriage Ann COGSWELL (daughter of Hezekiah COGSWELL and Suzanna BAILEY) was born in 1740 in Hebron, Tolland, Connecticut.13 She died on 27 Aug 1800 in Orford, Grafton, New Hampshire.10 The Cogswells in America, by E. Ann Cogswell, went to Nova Scotia in 1761, with her father and mother, but she returned with her sister Diadmia on the same vessel in which they had sailed. Having no children, she left at her decease certain landed estate to the Congretational Church in Orford, N.H., as expressed. "That the Gospel might be supported with respectability." This property rents for eighty dollars per annum. The town of Orford caused to be errected a marble slab over her grave "In Grateful remembrance." Fifth Generation 15. Gardner SPOONER (Isaac-4, William-3, John-2, William-1) was born on 21 Jun 1745 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.2 He died in Dec 1836 in Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont.2 Gardner SPOONER and Deborah SHAW were married.11 Deborah SHAW was born in 1742.5 She died in Jul 1828.5 Gardner SPOONER and Deborah SHAW had the following children: +19 i.
