Elias DYKE was born about 1768.1 He died on 18 Jan 1844 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.2,3 He was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.4 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 207. Elias Dike first bought land in the Gilead area in 1799. He purchased part of lot #4 1st Division of lots west of branch, part of the original grant of J. Throop. He later sold this land and purchased part of lot 12, 2nd Division about 1807. Here he built a home and bought additional land which on his death was passed on to his son, Augustus. Elias DYKE and Sally were married.5 Sally was born about 1766.6 She died on 29 Apr 1851 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.7 She was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.8 Elias DYKE and Sally had the following children: +2 i. Augustus DYKE, born in 1805, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont; married Polly SOUTHHARD9; died on 24 Jan 1882, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont3,10. 3 ii. Polly DYKE was born about 1810.6 She died on 11 May 1840 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.7 She was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.8 Second Generation 2. Augustus DYKE (Elias-1) was born in 1805 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont. He died on 24 Jan 1882 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.3,10 He was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.4 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 207. He lived his entire life on the place where he was born. He married Polly Southhard of Addison, Vt., and they had four children. Augustus deeded the land and rights to a spring for the Methodist Episcopal personage about 1844. According to Bethel land records, Augustus, was involved in some early land speculation and could have accumulated enough wealth for the purpose building the Dyke-Granger-Tweksubury House. It was likey built in the 1820 - 30 period, at least several years before the Civil War, as records show that Augustus children were born there. The beautiful old white colonial still stands across from the Gilead cemetery. Augustus DYKE and Polly SOUTHHARD were married.9 Polly SOUTHHARD was born about 1805.1 She died on 3 Jun 1882 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.7 She was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.4 Augustus DYKE and Polly SOUTHHARD had the following children: +4 i. Julius DYKE, born on 1 Dec 1832, Gilead, Windsor, Vermont11; married Lucinda DEERING9; died on 5 Apr 1894, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont7. 5 ii. Horace DYKE was born on 8 Aug 1834 in Gilead, Windsor, Vermont.11 He died on 6 Oct 1861 in Wilson's Creek, , Missouri.11 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 207. He fought in the Civil War in a Ohio regiment and was wounded at the battle of Wilson's Creek, Mo. He died soon after from wounds received. His body is probably buried there and was likely never moved to Bethel. There is a gravestone, or cenotaph, in Gelead cemetery with the words "Horace Dyke." He graduated at Dartmouth College preparatory for law and was attending Wesleyan College studying law when the Civil War broke out. He enlisted from Delaware, Ohio. +6 iii. David T. DYKE, born in Dec 1837, Gilead, Windsor, Vermont11; married Esther A. WILLIAMS12. +7 iv. Mary Jane DYKE, born on 21 Apr 1841, Gilead, Windsor, Vermont11; married John GRANGER13; died on 2 Apr 190411. Third Generation 4. Julius DYKE (Augustus-2, Elias-1) was born on 1 Dec 1832 in Gilead, Windsor, Vermont.11 He died on 5 Apr 1894 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.7 He was buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.8 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Julius DYKE and Lucinda DEERING were married.9 Lucinda DEERING was born on 10 Sep 1830.7 She died on 31 Mar 1916 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.7 She was buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.8 6. David T. DYKE (Augustus-2, Elias-1) was born in Dec 1837 in Gilead, Windsor, Vermont.11 David T. DYKE and Esther A. WILLIAMS were married.12 Esther A. WILLIAMS was born in 1836.6 She died in 1908.6 She was buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.8 7. Mary Jane DYKE (Augustus-2, Elias-1) was born on 21 Apr 1841 in Gilead, Windsor, Vermont.11 She died on 2 Apr 1904.11 Mary Jane DYKE and John GRANGER were married.13 John GRANGER was born. Sources 1.
