After his father's death he took possession of the farm, improved it and continued to live on it for about forty years, when he removed to the village, where he still resides, with wife and widowed daughter, Mrs. Sawyer, and her daughter, Miss Alice Sawyer. After completing his studies he taught school for several seasons, and in 1874 he accepted a position in the Alaska Commercial Company, at Alaska, and there he was located four season, returning to Vermont in 1877. He settled in Bethel and purchased the interest of George A. Montgomery in the firm of Brooks & Montgomery, and the buisness has since been conducted under the firm name of Brooks & Washburn.
