The lived at the beautiful old white colonial home across from the Gilead Cemetery. This was the home of this Granger family for many years. They had three children. He enlisted from Bethel in Co. F. 6th Vt., September 16, 1861. Discharged for disability December 10, 1862, he enlisted again in Co. G. 8th Vt., December 16, 1863, and was again discharged for disability, June 13, 1865. He never recovered his health broken by his was service, and died January 31, 1866. She had previous to her marriage, been a school teacher. It was not an accepted custom at that time to hire married women with children. Being the widow of a veteran who had died of war service with need to help support her three young children, she was given the teaching position at Gilead school. She was rated as an excellent teacher; one who interested herself in her pupils, exercising over them a kind of motherly care. She was, in a sense, at home among the pupils, most of whom she had always known. Mary was a remarkalbe woman, untiring in acts of neighborly kindness and always present to render skilful services to those stricken with sickness. She was the possessor of a sweet sopriano voice and was for years the leading singer and organist in the Gilead church, furnishing for the service the organ on which she played. She was beloved by all residents of Gilead. John GRANGER and Mary Jane DYKE had the following children: 56 i. Old residents can still remember the 5-lb wooden tubs of the delicious apple butter.
