PHELPS, Abraham M. Mr. A.M. Phelps, the oldest resident of the town of Newburgh, IN and one of it's first citizens, died on last Tuesday evening at half past six o'clock.Mr Phelps was eighty-eight years old at the time of his death. He has been confined to his bed all winter, and had been in a dying condition for several days. The funeral took place on Thurday evening, at ten o'clock a.m., from the house, Rev Galloway conducting the funeral exercises. (Boonville Enquirer-Apr 24, 1886) Notes: "Historical Markers Erected by Womens Club of Newburgh, Indiana", it lists the Phelps-Hopkins House, 208 State Street. It reads as follows, "One of Newburgh's most impressive brick homes was built in the 1850's by a native of Hartford, VT, Abraham M. Phelps, a successful merchant and well-known philanthropist. On June 10, 1820, with only thirty-three dollars in his pocket and his wardrobe slung over his back, he set out on foot for the West." It goes on to say that he amassed his fortune by manufacturing weaver's reeds. He married Frances Johnson in 1827. SARGEANT, Margaret Phelps. At Royalton, VT, Sept 28th, after a protracted illness of some months, which she bore with Christian patience and resignation, Mrs. Margaret Sargeant, consort of Mr. Jacob Sargeant.
