If you were to take the drive from Woodstock to Middlebury that cuts through the Green Mountains, that's a very nice drive (a little "hilly," obviously, which you should bear in mind if your car is loaded with gear or doesn't climb well: I think the road you would take is Route 12 North then 125 to Middlebury, but I don't have a map handy). Route 4 West from Woodstock, through Bridgewater, is pretty nice, too. Lake Champlain (and Burlington, particularly if you like "college towns") is a great place to visit, also (although Burlington is probably one and a half to two hours each way from Woodstock). Richard
