My query: I am trying to identify the parents of Eunice Emma Smith b. 1807 Hartford, Vt. who married 1831 in Dothan, Vt. Melvin GW Newton b. 1809 Hartford, Vt. The father of Eunice must be a Sylvanus Smith (one of their children is Sylvanus Smith Newton), but which one? (1)The Sprague Families in America states: "Amey Sprague, born 1764, married Prb. Sylvanus Smith a farmer". (2) The Newton Genealogy... descendants of Rev. "Roger: Sylvanus Jr. born_. Amy Sprague (I suppose the daughter of Jesse and Esther..." (3) Unfortunately the parents given for this Sylvanus Smith (Simeon Smith and Rachel Strong) have him born in 1775 making him an unlikely 11 years younger than his wife. (4) There is a prominent Sylvanus Smith in Norwich, Vt. 1790 census, and Hartford 1800 and 1810 censuses. Not found in the1820 census. His age in these censuses has him born before 1755. This more likely matches the age of Amey as the wife's age progresses in the censuses.(5) A Sylvanus Smith appears in the 1889 History of Hartford and in Hartford Town Meeting minutes (6) Another mystery: I recently rented the FHL film 0028354: Vital Statstics of Hartford 1764-1863. In the index for Vol 3 I found a reference to :the marriage of Melvin GW Newton and Eunice Smith on page! 152. Hoping to find the parents I looked for page 152 and it wasn't there. The film consists of mostly town meeting minutes, with very few vital record.. I put the film on indefinite loan to be able to pore over it at my leisure. Can anyone help me prove who the parents of Eunice Emma Smith are? Thanks, Ken Newton- San Diego
