He was a soldier in the Revolutionary and the French and Indian wars. He came to Randolph as a surveyor from Cornish, N.H. In 1803, his son, Samuel, came to Randolph and bought what has always been known as the Paine farm of Samuel Benedict. Capt. Samuel PAINE had the following children: +2 i. About 1850, the Paine farm was divided into five farms and parceled out to his five sons. The original house now stands, and was then on the old turnpike road. Mr. Paine owned one-fourth of teh stock in the turnpike, and was for many years gate-keeper. His house was a hotel for many years, and on his way to Burlington the Father of Queen Victoria of England, stopped over night at his house. Charles S. PAINE (Samuel-2, Samuel-1) was born on 30 Nov 1819 in Randolph, Orange, Vermont.3 Illustrated Historical Souvenier of Randolph, Vermont, Compiled & Published by Nickenson & Cox, Published Randolph, Vermont 1895, p. 64. Received his education in the district schools. Since 1848 he has been a farmer at South Randolph. Since he was a boy he has been interested in the habits of the birds and animals, and in later life he continues this interest for purposes of study. He has been quoted in a number of the standard works on ornithology. Although seventy-five years of age he reports for the local newspaper, and is as full of vigor as a much younger man. He is a skilled taxerdermist, and probably has a better knowledge of the habits of the birds than any other man in this section. He has held various town offices. Charles S. PAINE and Eliza G. LINCOLN were married on 5 Nov 1850.2 Eliza G.
