He was a merchant in New York, until 1806, when he moved to the northern part of New York State (Sackett's Harbor) and there took up a tract of land and laid out a town, naming it Huron. In Dec., 1807, he went to Lebanon, Ohio, where he made a position for himself. He was commissioned, 25 May, 1811, Brigadier General of the 2nd Brigade, Ohio Militia. On 14 July, 182, he recieved the appointment of Captain of Artillery in the U.S. Army under Gen. Harrison; and on 12 may, 1814, was made Captain of the 2nd U.S. Artillery. He served at Franklington, Ohio, and was drowned 29 March, 1815, while crossing the river Oglaze on his march to Fort Meigs, and was buried at Fort Defiance.
