Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 226. Sylvanus and Andrew Owen were among the early settlers of Gilead. On March 3, 1806, he sold to Sylvanus Owen one half of lot 11, second range, drawn to the original grant of Samuel Webster; that is part of the same land where the old colonial house known as the Stone place is now located. Sylvanus was a Revolutionary War veteran. He enlisted at Fairlee, Vermont, in the Green Mountain Boys Regiment commanded by Seth Warner. He served under Colonel Warner at Quebec, and the Battle of Bennington. Vermont Revolutionary Rolls lists his name several times on other service. He was one of the original 18 proprietors of Bethel. Sylvanus was of the fifth generation of teh Owen family in America, descended from John Owen who was a resident of New Haven, Connecticut in 1642. Through his mother, Hannah White, he was descended from William White, a signer of the Mayflower Compact. Sylvanus OWEN and Eunice ROBERTS were married on 4 May 1768 in Croyden, Cheshire, New Hampshire.2,3 Eunice ROBERTS was born about 1747.7 She died on 3 Oct 1795 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.8 Bethel Vermont Cemetery Records, 1792 - 1919, 89 leaves, records arranged alphabetically. Andrew ws the son of Sylvanus and came to Bethel from Dresden, nw Hanover, New Hampshire; he is listed as a resident of Bethel in the census of 1800, and resided where the brick house now owned by Howard Carter is located. In the Bethel, Vt., town records there is recorded a deed dated April 28, 1788, that Seth Chase sold to Andrew Owen "of Bethel" lot 14 in Second Range, West of the Branch (Book I, Page 55). This is the farm upon which he lived all his life and which later passed on to his son David O. Owen. Andrew is listed on the tax roll of 1828, but no tax charges so he had evidently conveyed the property to his son. Andrew OWEN and Sarah NEWMAN were married.13 Sarah NEWMAN was born on 1 Jan 1774.14 She died on 4 Nov 1845 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.14,25 She was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.23,26 Andrew OWEN and Sarah NEWMAN had the following children: +9 i.
