They settled there about 1790. Samuel Bowen when a boy he was bound out as an apprentice, but not liking his place he ran away and shipped before the mast, and sailed for the East Indies. Tried at lenght of a sea-faring life, he sought a home in Vermont in an early day. He made the journey on foot bringing all his earthly goods in a pack on his back. Among thee goods was included $150 in silver, which added so much to the weight of his pack and so chafed his shoulders that by the time he reached Boston he was glad to exhange the silver for paper money, taking Boston bank bills. He came first to Pomfret and later to Woodstock, where he lived three years. Bethel town records show a deed to Samuel Bowen from Calvin Bugbee for the south half of lot #7 in the first range east of Rochester line for the sum of $120. In 1812 he bought the north half of the same lot (original grant of Zebulon Lyon) for a small sum, it being sold for taxes by James Wallace, Constable. This land was a wilderness, only a few trees having been cut on it previous to his occupation. He built a log cabin in true pioneer stylle and commenced the labor of clearing the land. n the process of time, better buildings were erected, and on this place Samuel Bowen lived until the day of his death, which occurred October 7, 1876, at thea ge of 95 years old. He was a volunteer from Bethel at the battle of Plattsburg in the War of 1812. Records show he was a private in the Company of Capt. Nehemiah Noble of Bethel. He marched on foot to Burlington, reaching that place just after the battle was over. He returned by another route, having been absent from home seven days. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bowen retained their health and strength into a good old age. They had 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bowen was a member of the Gilead church for over 50 years.
