Batchelder (Batchellor) moved to Bethe in 1788, was recorded as a resident in the U.S. Census of 1790, and took the Freeman's Oath in Bethel in 1803. He was the father of 15 children of whom 12 matured. One of his children was Rebecca, who married John Thomas. Benjamin was a Revolutionary War veteran; served as a private in Capt. Wright's Co. from Brookfield, Mass. in the Lexington-Concord affair. On July 1, 1775 he enlisted in Capt. King's Company, 9th Mass. Regt. In 1777 he served in Col. Cushing's Regt. at the battle of Bennington. Where he acquired the title of Captain has not been determined - likely it was a militia title. For three generations the Batchellors lived a the house on the corner opposite the Gilead church. Capt.
