There is a website online, "Name Changes in Berkshire County." In 1847, Joseph Crosier Gallup, a resident of Adams, MA had his name changed to Joseph Crosier Marsdale. At the same time his four children and his wife's surname were changed to Marsdale. His wife was Laura Jane Cone. By 1850, he appears to have another wife named Harriet; at least Laura Jane wasn't with him. Somewhere along there she married a Hodges, first name unknown. Joseph was probably the son of Beniah and Sally (Crosier) Gallup, born in 1814 in Halifax, Windham Co., VT. The family later lived in Searsburg, Bennington Co., VT. It is said that Joseph died in Hartland, Windsor Co., VT in 1873. In 1870 he seems to be in Lebanon, Grafton Co., NH. I have not been able to find him buried in the online Hartland cemeteries. I would like to discover why the surname was changed, and other details regarding his life. I have some info on the four children if anyone is interested. Thanks! Joann Nichols
