He came of patriotic stock, his grandfather, Samuel Adams, was a relative and namesake of the famous Massachusetts patriot. He was the eight generation from Henry Adams, who came from England to Braintree, Mass., in 1634. His education advantages were very limited, as he attended the district school winters only, after seven years of age, with the exception of a short time at Newbury Seminary. He then remained on the farm with his father in Williamstown, to which town the family had removed, until the spring of 1851, when they came to Randolph. In 1854, he bought the Major Carpenter farm and there resided until his death. In politics Mr. Adams was a Republican, and during his life held many offices of trust in town and county. He was a selectman of the town from 1862 to 1867, and with his associates in office paid out of the town treasury during that time $60,000 to soldirs, together with the money offered by the government to selectmen for recruiting services. He was serving as selectman at the time of his death. He was town auditor seventeen consecutive years; lister for fourteen years; represented the town in county and State conventions; was a member of the Legislature from Randolph in 1874; was elected assistant Judge of Orange County Court in 1888, re-elected in 1890, and served four years; was a trustee of the Normal School at Randolph, from the time it started until his death, and was also the trustee of its endowment fund of $10,000. Soon after coming to Randolph, Mr. Adams cast in his lot with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and ever after was a faithful and consistent member thereof, ever ready with means and counsel to support its efforts for the upbuilding of the community. Few are the men so universally loved as wellas respected, and rare are those of whom it can as truthfully be said: "Servant of God, well done." ii.
