After his arrival in Bethel he traded his horse, saddle and bridle with John Payne, one of the proprietors of the town, for a lot of land on Christian Hill, where he came and settled in the spring of 1785. Since that time the title of this farm has always been held in the Wallace family, and it is now occupied by E.E. Wallace. John Wallace served in the Revolutionary War, in a regiment raised in Connecticut and commanded by Col. Ozias Bissell. John WALLACE and Betsy WRIGHT were married.10 9. He gegan life as a farmer with hs father in Bethel, and followed that line of business until 1866, when he sold the farm, moved to the village and bought the place where he now resides. In connection with his farming he was a cooper, and continued in this line until 1889, when he was obliged to give up active work on account of poor health. He was a musician during his younger days, and for fourteen years played in a local orchestra during the winter months. They reside in Bethel on Main Street. 12.
