    1. [VTWINDSO] Joseph Smith - Cavendish, VT
    2. Richard G. Smith
    3. I am trying to determine if the Joseph SMITH who was born 5 Jun 1785 at Cavendish Twp., Windsor, VT, the son of Moses SMITH and Lucy (?), was my g-g-grandfather. Is he the same Joseph SMITH who married Louisa MARBLE 21 Apr 1812 at Ashburnham MA and resided at Leominster, MA where he died 21 Jun 1834, at age 49? Joseph and Louisa had Lorenzo, Elvira, George, Alpha and Elbridge. I do not have an exact date of birth for my Joseph, just his age at death and the fact that he was born in VT. The above Joseph was the only one that I could find in VT in the IGI that was in the right range of dates. I would very much appreciate any information or assistance that you might be able to give me on the Moses Smith family of Cavendish. Thank you very much. Richard G. Smith Burnet, TX

Nothing yet to prove Zelah and Catherine as Bezaleel's parents, but I hope it helps anyway. Dianne * * * * * * * From: "Our County and its People: A Memorial Record of St. Lawrence County, New York" Edited by Gates Curtis, Syracuse, NY, D.Mason & Co. publishers, 1894 Pages 178/179 Personal sketches Baker, Lucius B., M.D., Russell, is a native of Russell, born February 17, 1846, a son of the Rev. Lucius S. Baker, the oldest Baptist minister in St. Lawrence County, who was born in Chester, Vermont, August 8, 1810. He was the oldest son in a family of 10 children, of Bezaleel Baker, born in New Hampshire, whose father was a native of Nova Scotia. Rev. L.S. Baker came to this county in 1842, where he has since lived. He was educated in Colgate University, formerly Madison, and commenced the ministry in 1837, which he has continued until within about five years, since which time he has ceased from active work. January 27, 1837, he married Hannah G. Walker, a native of Vermont, born April 21, 1814, died August 8, 1887, and they had three children: Celestine N., born March 28, 1838, died October 6, 1890; Lucius B., as above; and Roger J., born November 17, 1854, died February 6, 1882. Lucius B. was educated in St.Lawrence Academy, Potsdam, N.Y. and the medical department of the University of Vermont, from which he graduated in 1868. He began practice in Clifton, N.Y., and in September 1869, was appointed house physician in the Rochester City Hospital, where he remained three years, then was elected city physician practicing six years, and then came to Russell, where he has since lived, giving his time entirely to his chosen profession. He married in Rochester in 1874, Sarah C. Markley, a native of Winchester, Va., by whom he had one child, Kittie H., born June 28, 1875, died September 3, 1893. Dr. Baker is a charter member of the Rochester Free Dispensary and the Rochester Pathological Society; he is also a member of the St. Lawrence County Medical Society, and for several years, health officer of the towns of Russell, Clifton and Clare. He is liberal in religious belief and a Republican in politics. * * * * * * The 1850 census for Russell, Saint Lawrence County, NY shows "Bereleel" Baker, age 68, b. 2. Would you please take a look in your book on Cavendish for Bakers? I am looking for information on the family of Bezeleel Baker who married Catherine. They may be the Zelah Baker and Catherine Kendall married in 1803 in Cavendish. They lived in Chester and Cavendish and had about 10 children. Their son Frank Baker was born in Cavendish ( Proctorsville ) in 1828. I believe that they had another son named Lucius who became a minister and lived in Potsdam,Saint Lawrence, New York. Bezaleel, Catherine and Frank moved to Russell, New York. Bezeleel was supposedly born in Connecticut, Massachusetts or New Hampshire and his father was supposedly born in Nova Scotia. I would appreciate any information on this family. Thank you. Sharlene Shipman Baker in California ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Janice, Thank you so much for writing. I am fortunate to have Ms. Welch's book and have found it very useful. My problem is I have to have a document to prove the marriage. That means I need a copy of the marriage record, or a copy of the registry of a child's birth that lists both of them as parents, or a copy of some other original document that proves their marriage. Any ideas where I can obtain this proof other than the Town Clerk at Cavendish or the State personnel checking Cavendish records on microfilm? Again, I thank you for your kindness in answering me. Hope I can return the favor one of these days. 3. Hello! I am new to the Windsor County Vermont list, but I am a descendant of Abel BALDWIN, Jr. and Rhoda Stent PLANT, both of whom were born in Cavendish. My problem is that I cannot find their marriage record and do not know much about researching in Vermont records. I did write to the Town Clerk for Cavendish and also to the State for a marriage in Cavendish. Neither one was able to locate one. They may have married in some other town, or maybe in another state since the New England states are small. Supposedly they married Oct 06, 1813. Their first child, Rhoda S. BALDWIN, was born about 1816 in Vermont. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, would the births of their children (1816 to about 1836) be recorded somewhere? Town Hall, or elsewhere? I will appreciate all replies, and I'm willing to share what I have with other researchers. Thank you! Anna Bertram (In Middle Tennessee)

    2. First Generation 1. Luther BOYDEN died in 1842.1 Luther BOYDEN and Hannah GOFF were married.2 Hannah GOFF was born. Luther BOYDEN and Hannah GOFF had the following children: +2 i. Nelson Luther BOYDEN, born on 19 Jul 1836, Barnard, Windsor, Vermont3; married Eleanor Augene CARPENTER4. Second Generation 2. Nelson Luther BOYDEN (Luther-1) was born on 19 Jul 1836 in Barnard, Windsor, Vermont.3 Illustrated Historical Souvenier of Randolph, Vermont, Compiled & Published by Nickenson & Cox, Published Randolph, Vermont 1895, p. 133. His father died in 1842, leaving no property. As the years rolled on, Nelson became convinced that, to make anything of life, he must have as much education as could be obtained. He attended the district schools of his native town, and in time entered Royalton Academy. Here he supported himself and paid his tution by teaching, and remained until he was fitted for college course through lack of means. All his education to that point was obtained by his unaided efforts. In Febraury 1861, he removed to Randolph, where he taught in the Orange County Grammar School, as he had before fone in Royalton Academy. He continued his teaching Randolph a part of the time for two years. In the summer of 1861, he entered the office of Hon. Philander Perrin, as a student, and prosecuted his studies in connection with teaching until the June Term, 1865, of Orange County Court, when he was admitted to the bar. His whole professional life has been spent in Randolph, where he has practiced the law since his admission. Mr. Boyden has been, from early life, deeply interested in educational matters. he was Superintendent of Schools in Barnard, and again in Randolph from 1858 to 1872. When the old Orange County Grammar School became a State Normal School, Mr. Boyden was a moving spirit in the change. He ws made one of the Board of Trustees, which position he has since held continuously, and he has also been and is President of the Board. Septemeber 15, 1893, the Normal School building was burned, with the greater part of its contents. The school was at once opened the old Town House, which had been granted the school by the town, but hardly had work begun when this building also burned (September 26), with what remained of the school property. Mr. Boyden immediately went to work for the school. He obtained a settlement with the Insurance Companies, and secured the money form them. On the day of the burning of the Town Hall, the rebuilding of the present school building was begun under Mr. Boden's superintendence and completed so that the school was opened the first week of February. he gave his whole time to the work; nothing escaped his careful eye, and the result is a monument to his diligence. The school building, built by his efforts is second to none in the State, and to Mr. Boyden the Normal School owes a debt it can never repay. Mr. Boyden was Town Clerk of Randolph for twenty-five years. in 1882 he represented Orange County in the Senate, and in 1888-89, he represented Randolph in the General Assembly, and was Chairman of the Committee on Railroads, as well as a member of the Judiciary Committee. For some years he has lived on a farm, and has or had one of the finest herds of Jersy thoroughbreds in the State. Nelson Luther BOYDEN and Eleanor Augene CARPENTER were married.4 Eleanor Augene CARPENTER was born. Nelson Luther BOYDEN and Eleanor Augene CARPENTER had the following children: 3 i. At the age of twenty-eight came with his wife, Cynthia Kimball, aged twenty-five, to Randolph, and located on what has since been called "Gifford Hill," at the south-east portion of the town. The Registry of Deeds shows that he made there several purchases of land, seventy acres of which were bought as early as 1791. The story goes that he moved on horseback, and brought with him, among his other household goods, a silver spoon, which had belonged to his father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, who were all John Gifford by name. In those early days very few settlements had been made, and Mr. Gifford delighted to tell of his advntures with bears. One in particular; when his wife, after tying up her babies, to prevent them crawling into the fire-place, rode off through the woods to the nearest neighbors for help, while he watched the bear, which he had found in his log barn, lest he escape. Charles Marshall Bugbee of Springfield, Massachusetts in his records of 1914, which contained information furnished by Mary Hope (Bugbee) Medbury and by Herbert N. Bugbee of Fitchburg, Massachusetts and from the collected material of Edwin Holmes Bugbee of Killingly, Connecticut, adds the names of three daughtes and their husbands to the seven children of Josiah as originally named by Edwin Holmes Bugbee. The total of ten children was also in the records that were produced by Edgar Curtis Bugbee of Tullahoma, Tennessee in 1920. Although it would be reasonable to assume these daughters wre born in the interval between Sarah and Nathaniel, for lack of the actual dates of their birth, their names are placed at the end of the records. (J.C.P.) Josiah Bugbee was two years old when his father moved to Woodstock, Connecticut. He was one of the first settlers of Ashford, Connecticut, and bought land of Captain John Chandler in 1712 in that part of town called New Scituate. On March 5, 1713, it was voted at the Ashford Proprietors meeting "that each Proprietor have 200 acres set aside for him" and that in accordance with that vote, 45 of the Proprietors drew 200 acres of land each. Josiah Bugbee was one of the 45 Proprietors. He was active in the establishing of the first church at Ashford and on February 12, 1727, he was elected one of the Deacons.
