Complied and Arranged by Fred Cox. Bethel, Vermont. 1895. p. 81. Remove from Rochester to Bethel, Vt in 1818. Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 182. He went early to Brookfield, Vermont, where he was in business for a while. In the Rochester land records Book 2, page 195, Dudley Chase sold to Daniel Child for #300, lot #5 in 6th range of one hundred acre lots, east of river, 2nd Division, August 4, 1804. Dudley Chase was the main proprietor of the town of Rochester as well as the town of Bethel. After marriage, Daniel Child and his bride moved to Rochester Hollow. Here he made a beginning in the wilderness. He cleared land and built a house where Kenneth Webster's camp is now located. He selected this place for settlement under the impression that the main highway of travel from towns below to Montpelier would be laid out through Rochester Hollow. Such expectations failed to materialize and in the summer of 1818 he moved to Bethel. He exchanged farms with Charles Morse, who in turn moved to Rochester Hollow. The farm that Daniel Child secured from Charles Morse in the swap was located in the short cross road from the Camp Brook road to the present Route 12; the first place on the right going south, and known in later years as the Savage place. Daniel Child was evidently not satisfied with the house or cabin tht was located on the place he had obtained form Morse and proceeded to have a new home constructed. The contract for building was let to Chester and Cyrus Chapman for a certain specified sum including what rum they could drink. Two of the Child boys had the job of bringing the rum from Bethel. They carried it in an old fashioned gallon jug which was strung on a stick between them, making a trip almost daily. (The builders must have been able to carry their liquor well. It is doubtful if presen day builders would be able to consturct a house that was true and plumb if they were to consume a gallon of liquor daily.) Daniel Child, according to family tradition, marched to Plattsburg, New York in the War of 1812, but arrived too late for the battle. He was a great pedestrian and walked to Ohio and back in 1818. This was a prospecting trip to look for land. Not finding the Ohio country to his liking, he made the move to Bethel. Daniel Child was a prominent man in local affairs of Bethel. He was town clerk for several years. In 1829 he was employed to transcribe the records of the proprietors of the town. The book, as transcribed y him, is now in the town vault. He was a well known surveyor and records of surveys and his notes and field books have been of great assistance in finding property lines. He was very meticulous in details. His records, written in a fine hand, are proof of that. The early records of birth, marriages and deaths are of great value in historical research. Seven of the nine Daniel Child children were bor in Rochester Hollow. The last two were born in Bethel, Vermont. He was one of the signers of the agreement to organize and build Old Christ Chruch, and was clerk of the Episcopal district of that area. At the time the Woodstock Mercury was the local paper in this section. He would visit the Post office on Friday and collect all papers belonging to subscribers in the Gilead area, and before services Sunday at the Old Church he would scatter them throug the pews for the owners. Thus it was necessary to attend church to receive the newspaper. Daniel CHILD and Apama LYMAN were married on 11 Nov 1804 in Brookfield, Orange, Vermont.19-21 11. Apama LYMAN was born on 15 Sep 1783 in Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire.16,22 She died on 21 Sep 1854 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.16 She was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.18 Daniel CHILD and Apama LYMAN had the following children: i. Third Generation 11. George Henry MARTIN (Henry-2, Rufus-1) was born on 5 Jan 1833 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.12 He died on 4 Aug 1906 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.23 He was buried in Little Hollow Cemetery, Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.19 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 217 & 218. George operated the Martin farm until his death in 1906, and soon after the Martin farm passed into the hands of others than the Martin family. They had no children, but brought up several nieces. George was living on the original Martin farm in 1882. George Henry MARTIN and Betsey Jane FOLSOM were married on 1 Jan 1861 in Turnbridge, Orange, Vermont.20,22 Betsey Jane FOLSOM was born on 17 Nov 1833.27 She died on 24 Apr 1895.27 She was buried in Little Hollow Cemetery, Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.19 12. Burnap A. MARTIN (Henry-2, Rufus-1) was born on 2 Oct 1835 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.12 He died on 11 Aug 1900 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.24 He was buried in Little Hollow Cemetery, Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.28 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 218. They latter lived on the David Dyke place in the hollow and then moved to a place on Thayer Brook where Frank Hayward now lives. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edson E. Holbrook, in Bethel, Vermont. He enlisted in Co. E, 2nd U.S. Sharpshooter at West Randolph, October 1, 1861. He was mustered on Novebmer 9, 1861, and was discharged for disability May 22, 1862. The conditions for enlistment required that each recruit should, in a public trial, firing from the shoulder and without telescopic sights, in ten shots palce ten bullets within a ten inch ring, at a distance of 200 yards, and this tese was rigidly exacted. Most of the men carried their own rifles when first mustered. Before takng the field they were exchanged for Colt repeating rifles which were also later replaced by Sharpe's. They were all expert marksmen and on one occasion they dispalyed their skill before President Lincoln (President Lincoln himself took a rifle and had some target practice) and General McClellan. At the time sone surprising shots were made, Col. Berdan hitting at 600 years the right eye of teh painted figure a man used as a targe, having announced he would do so; he was evidently using a rifle with a telescopic sight. Company E was in training at West Randolph for about thrity days before leaving for Washington. They camped on the Fairgrounds on what is now known as the highlands area. They were marched from there at each mess call to the Mansion House where their meals were served. a few years ago the old Mansion House was torn down and a the Mini-Market store and gas station built on the site. None of the Burnap Martin family had markers at the Hollow Cemetery, but before Memorial Day, 1793, Burton Flint, a nephew, had a gravestone placed on his uncle's grave with his Civil War record inscribed on the stone. A flag holder ws placed nearby. Probably there originally was one placed there by the G.A.R. Post but it had long ago disappeaed. Thus, on Memorial Day, 75 years later, a flag waves in the old cemetery over the grave of Burnap Martin. East Hollow Cemetery - Head Stone: Burnap Martin 2nd U.S. Sharp Shooters Co. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976. p. 214 - 217. Rufus Martin, eldest son of Gideon Martin of Randolph, purchased of Dudley Chase, the main proprietor of Rochester, lot #8 in the 6th range of the 2nd Division for 100 on March 20, 1800. Rufus was probably a veteran of the War of 1812, as there is a Rufus S. Martin listed. Rufus went early into Little Hollow to settle. He was the second settler there and built the first frame house drawing some of he lumber and the bricks from the fireplace and chimney over two mountian ranges from Orwell and Brandon, with Oxen. He is lsited in the vermont Census of 1800 as residing in Bethel. This is an error. The Bethel town line is only a short distance from the Rochester line and census takers of those days were not always aware of town boundaries. He is listed as a head of family with two children. Rufus Martin an dhis wife, Abigail Brown, were neighors in Windham, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Martin) Brown. Family tradition is that they were cousins. Eight children were born to them in Rochester, Vermont. As a boy Rufus was greatly interested in woodworking and pestered his father to buy him a turning lathe. Whether he did or did not is not known, but somehow he did secure a hand lathe. Some time after he had settled in Little Hollow he built a small water power mill just below the jnction of Cemetery and Mountain brooks about were Webster's pond is now located. He evidently had a saw of some sort also, is now located. he evidently had a saw of some sort also. Rufus became quite skilled in the manufacture of furniture. Some of it is still in existence, for Burton Flint of Randolph a descendant, has a beautiful candle stand with hand turned legs, a similar drop leaf table and an old cherry chest. He also has two ladder back chairs, and a rocker with the seats woven from brown or swamp ash strips. This swamp ash was thoroughly soaked in water for several days. It was then pounded to loosen the growth layers of wood wich whould then peel off in strips. The strips were again soaked in water and woven into the chair seat. When dried out the seat was solid.
