He purchased part of lot #4 1st Division of lots west of branch, part of the original grant of J. Throop. He later sold this land and purchased part of lot 12, 2nd Division about 1807. Here he built a home and bought additional land which on his death was passed on to his son, Augustus. Augustus deeded the land and rights to a spring for the Methodist Episcopal personage about 1844. According to Bethel land records, Augustus, was involved in some early land speculation and could have accumulated enough wealth for the purpose building the Dyke-Granger-Tweksubury House. It was likey built in the 1820 - 30 period, at least several years before the Civil War, as records show that Augustus children were born there. The beautiful old white colonial still stands across from the Gilead cemetery. He died soon after from wounds received. His body is probably buried there and was likely never moved to Bethel. There is a gravestone, or cenotaph, in Gelead cemetery with the words "Horace Dyke." 1. [VTWINDSO] CHAMBERLIN, Isaac - Descendants of (part 2)
    2. Third Generation 5. George L. CHAMBERLIN (Isaac-2, Isaac-1) was born on 7 Sep 1849 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.5 He died on 29 Sep 1935.4 The Illustrated Historical Souvenir of Bethel, Vermont. Complied and Arranged by Fred Cox. Bethel, Vermont. 1895. p. 77. Now a successful farmer in the western part of the township, near his father. Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 202. George Chamberlin bought the John Ryan place in Gilead in 1881. he lived there for the balance of his life. he was very active in the Gilead church. His youngest child, Abbie, married Guy Reed and they lived on the homeplace for most of their adult life. At this writing, Abbie is living but not in good health. For years this place wa known as the Guy Reed place and is now owned by Geogre Sawyer, a Randolph plumber. When George Sawyer, the present owner of the George Chamberlin place, was remodeling the house he found a diary kept by Chamberlin in 1888. Mr. Sawyer kindly let me read the diary and I have included some exerpts with comments from that diary. The quotes are just as he wrote them. He states January 9: "Pleasant nice sledding. I done my chores and got ready ane went up and got about 1 3/4 solid cords that Brad Brown had cut and piled on the snake piece and drawed down home and in the afternoon father and I went up to Randolph with it to Dr. Davis and got 50 lbs. middlings 73 cents and 5 quires of paper 18 cents and a bunch of envelopes 05 and 2 No. 5 and 2 No. 6 sewing machine needles 16 cents and 1 lb. dates and 10 and I fetched home some grain for John Byam and he fetched home father. January 20, he wrote "15 eggs today" Every day in January he record the number of eggs from the hens. Shows a high of 18 eggs on january 21, to a low of only 7 on January 30, and a total of 387 for the month of January. He does not state how many hens he kept but that is pretty good production for a farmer's flock in those days, especiall in the cold month of January. Farmers' hens were apt to get their combs frozen and they ceased to lay until the comb was healed. His records show that he sold or traded for produce 366 eggs out of a total of 387 produced. So for the month of January only 21 eggs were used by the Chamberlin family. These 21 were probably cracked and unsalable. Eggs were too valuable a market commodity to be consumed at home. I can remeber as a child we liked Easter; that was about the only morning we could expect eggs for breakfast; that was a special day and the family were all allowed eggs. Much of the family livelihood was derived from the barter system as in his dairy on January 31: "Pleasant. I done my chores and when father came with his eggs I went to Bethel. Carried 3 doz. eggs to George Abbotts 66 and got 1 lb. coffee 34 (a luxury that rarely shows in the trading report) and 1/4 lb. nutmeg 20 and 1/4 lb. cream tarter 14. I got $410.00 of Mr. Haven and paid it to George Abbott, got a shovel 75 and 5 lbs. of wire nails 25 to Tupper (George Tupper was a dealer in heavy and shelf hardware, stoves and tinware, hollow ware, nails, sash and blinds and woodenware, Main St., Bethel) and 100 lbs meal 1.40 and 50 lbs. middlings 67 to Gilson (dealer in flour and feed) and 10 lbs. graham 30 to Brooks (Brooks & Washburn, groceries and dry goods). Let Eslie have 25 cents and he went to Henry Haradens to a dance candy pull." Eslie was only 14 years old but according to the diary he did a man's work. Often states the Eslie was chopping in the woods alone all day. He writes that he 'received the Randolph paper and the Montreal Star and Blade and Campaign." He probably feeling flush after getting $10.00 from Mr. haven. Expert it was for services rendered for there is no mention of ever borrowing any money. Every month he reports a financial account of money received, paid out and cash on hand. Some months the cash on hand would not be more than a dollar and some cents. People in those days lived within their incomes. Every day in the winter they were either cutting wood and logs or at the neighbors with his saw rig. He owned a drag saw and a circular saw which were operated by a horse power tread mill. Speaks several times of hauling logs down to Tom's mill (Thomas Neff). Started haying about the last of June and did mowing for his neighbors with his machine. Probably was one of the few mowing machines in that area. He writes of a trip to Randolph to hear Professor W. W. Dayton expose Spiritualims; that was a controverisal subject at that time. He planted potates in May; Stephen, Bernansees, Snowflakes and Red potatoes. September 4, he writes "Fathe and I went to Bethel to Freemans, Meeting. We sent Fred (Marks ?) as representative to Mont." (That was what we now call Primary Election.) He often writes of splitting and shaving shingles both from spruce and hemlock. There presently is no cedar in that are and as far as I can ascertain there never was, so they made their shingles of spruce and hemlock. Sat. Aug. 18: "Paid my taxes min 2.21 and the place 1.81." In October they were digging potatoes and picking apples, Bethel apples and smoe sweet ones. October 17: He writes of killing the hogs then borrowed the sauage machine from a neighbor. He cut up the meat and salted the pork. The next day he hauled hemlock bark to the tannery in Bethel 1 3/4 cords and received $6 per cord. While there sent $1 postal note for the Yankee Blade and paid 5 cent for sending it. Nov. 6: "Went to Bethel and voted for Harrison and Morton." Presidential election). Nov. 12: "Went to Bethel with Eslie to a Republican street parade." (Republicans celebrating the election of Harrison. WIth few exceptions all rural Vermonters in those days were Republicans). He never mentions doing any work on Sunday except chores; went to church every Sunday they held services, and for years was janitor at the Gilead church. He also tells of the boys going hunting in November but doesn't say they got anything. Evidently Christmas was not made much of at the Chamberlin home in 1888. No mention is made of Christmas, but Decoration Day and July 4th are acknowledged. Decmeber 25: "Pleasant and warm. I done my chores and Eslie and I went up into Mr. Ellis and drag-sawed most all day. Went with Jep and the old mare. Father butchered for Ap McIntosh. Father went in his buggy" (evidently no snow on Christmas day in 1888). George L. CHAMBERLIN and Netta F. (Nettie) HARRINGTON were married on 28 Dec 1870 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.5,12 Netta F. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976. p. 214 - 217. Rufus Martin, eldest son of Gideon Martin of Randolph, purchased of Dudley Chase, the main proprietor of Rochester, lot #8 in the 6th range of the 2nd Division for 100 on March 20, 1800. Rufus was probably a veteran of the War of 1812, as there is a Rufus S. Martin listed. Rufus went early into Little Hollow to settle. He was the second settler there and built the first frame house drawing some of he lumber and the bricks from the fireplace and chimney over two mountian ranges from Orwell and Brandon, with Oxen. He is lsited in the vermont Census of 1800 as residing in Bethel. This is an error. The Bethel town line is only a short distance from the Rochester line and census takers of those days were not always aware of town boundaries. He is listed as a head of family with two children. Rufus Martin an dhis wife, Abigail Brown, were neighors in Windham, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Martin) Brown. Family tradition is that they were cousins. Eight children were born to them in Rochester, Vermont. As a boy Rufus was greatly interested in woodworking and pestered his father to buy him a turning lathe. Whether he did or did not is not known, but somehow he did secure a hand lathe. Some time after he had settled in Little Hollow he built a small water power mill just below the jnction of Cemetery and Mountain brooks about were Webster's pond is now located. He evidently had a saw of some sort also, is now located. he evidently had a saw of some sort also. Rufus became quite skilled in the manufacture of furniture. Some of it is still in existence, for Burton Flint of Randolph a descendant, has a beautiful candle stand with hand turned legs, a similar drop leaf table and an old cherry chest. He also has two ladder back chairs, and a rocker with the seats woven from brown or swamp ash strips. This swamp ash was thoroughly soaked in water for several days. It was then pounded to loosen the growth layers of wood wich whould then peel off in strips. The strips were again soaked in water and woven into the chair seat. When dried out the seat was solid. Rufus MARTIN and Abigail BROWN were married.23,24 15. Abigail BROWN was born on 16 Sep 1769.25 She died on 29 Aug 1827 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.26 She was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.22,27 Rufus MARTIN and Abigail BROWN had the following children: i. Polly MARTIN was born on 19 Nov 1795 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.13 She died on 16 Dec 1851.25 ii. Sally MARTIN was born on 2 May 1797 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.13 She died on 3 Aug 1877 in Delaware, Delaware, Ohio.13 7 iii. Sophia MARTIN. iv. Henry is his later years moved to a place south of the Hollow cemetery where he died December 24, 1884, at age 82. This place was probably the site of Rufus Martin's first log home. Henry is buried in the Little Hollow cemetery as is his wife, Betsey. v. Lucinda MARTIN was born on 26 Apr 1805 in Rochester, Windsor, Vermont.13 She died on 11 Apr 1888.25 vi. Samuel COTTON and Elizabeth had the following children: +2 i. Bibye Lake COTTON, born on 9 Sep 1763, Pomfret, Windham, Connecticut5,6; married Alice CHASE, on 5 Apr 1789, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont7; died on 27 Mar 1846, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont8. Second Generation 2. Bibye Lake COTTON (Samuel-1) was born on 9 Sep 1763 in Pomfret, Windham, Connecticut.5,6 He died on 27 Mar 1846 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.8 He was buried in Old Church Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.9 IGI - Extracted Birth Record: Name listed as Bybe Luke Cotton. Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 188. Bibye Lake Cotton was a soldier of the Revolution. He was one of the organizers and supporters of the Old Christ Chruch and was also a signer of the oranization of the M.E. Church at Gilead. The Cotton family came to Bethel in 1790 and settled on land on the east side of the Thrid Branch. He first built a log house beside the stream. Later when the road was constructed from Bethel to Randolph, like the Benjamin Smith (brother-in-law) family, he moved up onto the new road and built a home where Robert Trask now lives. Though not a devout man, he in some way acquired the nickname of "Deacon." A highly respeted churchman traveling this way made a slight mistake regarding the meaning of Bibye's title and questioned him in regard to the state of religion in this vicinity. "It's in a damned low state," said Cotton. The churchman thought so too, and passed on. At a 4th of July celebration which the Old revolutionary veteran attended, a dinner was held at the old "White River House." A hungry crowd gathered around the talbes after the other coursed had been served the puddings were brougt on, hot from the oven. Cotton was served his plate and being too impatient to wait for it to cool, took a geerous mouthful. It was hotter than he expected and he rolled the pudding from one side of his mouth to the other to prevent it from burning him. Finally he spit it into his hand and laid it beside his plate. One of his fellow veterans who had watched his actions with considerable interest ventured to ask him what he was going to do with the pudding by the side of his plate. "Keep it to light my pipe with, by God," came the quick reply. Bibye was held in high esteem as a citizen and was involved to a considerable extent in management of public affairs of the town of Bethel. Bibye Lake COTTON and Alice CHASE were married on 5 Apr 1789 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.7 Alice CHASE (daughter of Dea. 1. [VTWINDSO] CHASE, Lois - Descendants of
    2. First Generation 1. Lois CHASE was born on 16 Aug 1756 in Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire.1-3 She died on 4 Jan 1832 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.4,5 She was buried in Old Church Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.6 The Illustrated Historical Souvenir of Bethel, Vermont. Complied and Arranged by Fred Cox. Bethel, Vermont. 1895. p. 46. The original log cabin were Mr. Smith was born was located on the meadow, near the west branch of the White River, and there were only two or three families in Bethel at the time. On acount of the depredations of teh Indians, there was a general feeling of alarm throughout the country. It was increased by the burning of Royalton about this time, and Deacon Dudley Chase came to Bethel to take his daughter home with to Cornish, N.H., till the danger should be past. There were no roads in those days, and it would have been necceary for her to ride on horse-back behind her father on a pillion, which she was in no conditin to do. After the birth of her son, however, she was taken about four miles to the fort at the mouth of the first branch, and remained there for some time. Lois CHASE and Benjamin SMITH were married in 1779.1,7 Benjamin SMITH was born on 6 Dec 1753 in Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire.5,8 He died on 12 Oct 1822 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.5,9 He was buried in Old Church Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.6 The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Volume 90, p. 241. Benjamin Smith enlisted, 1775, in Captain Moseley's company, Colonel Durkee's regiment, Connecticut troops, and, 1776 - 77, served in Captain Brown's company. He was engaged in the battles of Bunker Hill, Harlem, and Trenton. In 1818, he applied for a pension. His claim was allowed. He was born in Pomfret, Conn.; died in Bethel, Vt. The Illustrated Historical Souvenir of Bethel, Vermont. Complied and Arranged by Fred Cox. Bethel, Vermont. 1895. p. 46. Came to Bethel, Vt., in the early part of 1780, and settled on the farm (then a wilderness) now occupied by Squire Bowen on the Randolph road. When the town was settled Deacon Dudly Chase, one of the original proprietors gave to his eldest son, Simeon, and his two daughters, Alice and Lois respectively, three farms adjoining, this being one of them. Benjamin Smith carried on this farm until his death, which occured September 12, 1822. There were twelve children born of this marriage. Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 186. Benjamin Smith did not settle in the Gilead. However, his family was colosey connected with affairs of the Old Church and the Gilead neighborhood. He was a native of Connecticut, but at the time of their marriage lived in Cornish, New Hampshrie. After their wedding they came to Bethel to settle in the summer of 1780. His name appears among the names of teh original proprietors of the town. The Smith family came into Bethel among the very first settlers. They settled up the thrid branch and, there being no road laid out to Randolph, they kept close to the stream. Like several other early settlers in this area, they built a log cabin on the bank of the third branch. At the time thee were no other families living along the branch between them and the fort, or what is now Bethel village. During the summer of 1780, Indians were somewhat troublesome. Raiding parties were in the White River area and did pick up some settlers and carry them back to Canada as prisoners. It was during this time of Indian troubles that the Smith's first child was born, a son named Asa, who was also the first white child born in Bethel. As soon as she ws able, Lois Chase Smith was taken to the fort in Bethel and was in the fort when Royalton was burned by the raiding British and Indians. He continued to clear land and in course of time left the log cabin on the branch and built the house where Albert Brunner now lives. Here he and his wife lived for the rest of their lives. Their son Asa inherited the farm. Benjamin is listed as a veteran of teh Revolution with service in Vermont units during Indian raids. Lois CHASE and Benjamin SMITH had the following children: +2 i. 1. [VTWINDSO] CHILD, Stephen - Descendants of (part 1 of 3)
    2. First Generation 1. Stephen CHILD was born on 27 Nov 1749 in Woodstock, Windham, Connecticut.1 He died on 24 May 1831 in Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire.1 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 182. of Woodstock, Connecticut. He was one of the early proprietors of Bethel but never became a resident of the town. Two of his sons were early settlers; they were Daniel and Enos. Stephen CHILD and Mercy CHASE were married on 7 Sep 1778 in Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire.1-3 Mercy CHASE (daughter of Dea. Dudley CHASE and Alice CORBETT) was born on 6 Apr 1755 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts.1 She died on 27 Dec 1835 in Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire.1 Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 182. Eldest daguther of Dudley Chase and Alice Corbett. Stephen CHILD and Mercy CHASE had the following children: +2 i. Daniel CHILD, born on 6 Aug 1779, Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire4-6; married Apama LYMAN, on 11 Nov 1804, Brookfield, Orange, Vermont7-9; died on 7 Jan 1853, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont5. +3 ii. Enos CHILD, born on 10 Jan 1783, Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire10,11; married Sarah BEMIS, on 23 Aug 180612,13; died on 20 Jan 1839, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont5,10,11. Second Generation 2. Daniel CHILD (Stephen-1) was born on 6 Aug 1779 in Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire.4-6 He died on 7 Jan 1853 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.5 He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.14 The Illustrated Historical Souvenir of Bethel, Vermont. Complied and Arranged by Fred Cox. Bethel, Vermont. 1895. p. 81. Remove from Rochester to Bethel, Vt in 1818. Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 182. He went early to Brookfield, Vermont, where he was in business for a while. In the Rochester land records Book 2, page 195, Dudley Chase sold to Daniel Child for #300, lot #5 in 6th range of one hundred acre lots, east of river, 2nd Division, August 4, 1804. Dudley Chase was the main proprietor of the town of Rochester as well as the town of Bethel. After marriage, Daniel Child and his bride moved to Rochester Hollow. Here he made a beginning in the wilderness. He cleared land and built a house where Kenneth Webster's camp is now located. He selected this place for settlement under the impression that the main highway of travel from towns below to Montpelier would be laid out through Rochester Hollow. Such expectations failed to materialize and in the summer of 1818 he moved to Bethel. He exchanged farms with Charles Morse, who in turn moved to Rochester Hollow. The farm that Daniel Child secured from Charles Morse in the swap was located in the short cross road from the Camp Brook road to the present Route 12; the first place on the right going south, and known in later years as the Savage place. Daniel Child was evidently not satisfied with the house or cabin tht was located on the place he had obtained form Morse and proceeded to have a new home constructed. The contract for building was let to Chester and Cyrus Chapman for a certain specified sum including what rum they could drink. Two of the Child boys had the job of bringing the rum from Bethel. They carried it in an old fashioned gallon jug which was strung on a stick between them, making a trip almost daily. (The builders must have been able to carry their liquor well. It is doubtful if presen day builders would be able to consturct a house that was true and plumb if they were to consume a gallon of liquor daily.) Daniel Child, according to family tradition, marched to Plattsburg, New York in the War of 1812, but arrived too late for the battle. He was a great pedestrian and walked to Ohio and back in 1818. This was a prospecting trip to look for land. Not finding the Ohio country to his liking, he made the move to Bethel. Daniel Child was a prominent man in local affairs of Bethel. He was town clerk for several years. In 1829 he was employed to transcribe the records of the proprietors of the town. The book, as transcribed y him, is now in the town vault. He was a well known surveyor and records of surveys and his notes and field books have been of great assistance in finding property lines. He was very meticulous in details. His records, written in a fine hand, are proof of that. The early records of birth, marriages and deaths are of great value in historical research. Seven of the nine Daniel Child children were bor in Rochester Hollow. The last two were born in Bethel, Vermont. He was one of the signers of the agreement to organize and build Old Christ Chruch, and was clerk of the Episcopal district of that area. At the time the Woodstock Mercury was the local paper in this section. He would visit the Post office on Friday and collect all papers belonging to subscribers in the Gilead area, and before services Sunday at the Old Church he would scatter them throug the pews for the owners. Thus it was necessary to attend church to receive the newspaper. Daniel CHILD and Apama LYMAN were married on 11 Nov 1804 in Brookfield, Orange, Vermont.7-9 Apama LYMAN (daughter of Josiah LYMAN and Eunice TIFFANY) was born on 15 Sep 1783 in Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire.5,15 She died on 21 Sep 1854 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.5 She was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Bethel, Windsor, Vermont.14 Daniel CHILD and Apama LYMAN had the following children: +4 i. Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 184. He came to Gilead to settle about 1813. The first lot purchased was July 24, 1809, but he did not settle on this lot; this lot was bought at a tax collector sale. He later purchased the lot where he built his home on the place now owned by Longacre. He built the house now standing there and constructed a saw mill on Ordway Brook. The remains of the old stone dam and sluiceway that carried water to the mill whell are still there. This mill was operated by different owners for well over a century. He was active in town affairs, as the Old Bethel town reocrds show mention of his namve several times. Most of his children removed from town when young, and they had slight connection with its history. From an old account book of Enos Child prices are shown for the year 1813. he charged his neighbor Elias Dike $4.57 for 137 lbs. beef, Zephanial Batchelder $1.00 for 7 lbs. of pork, David Torrey $10,00 for 60 lbs. of pork and 50 cents for one bushel of potatoes and $16.59 for a feather bed. Why th odd censts is not known unless feather beds were sold by the pound. He charge neighbor Joel Babbitt for several days work including haying at the Rate of 57 cents per day. Mr. Babbit was evidently short and Child long on horse equipment - there are numerous charges for the use of the Child team. For a trip to Randolph he charged 25 cents, to Royalton 36 cents, and for several trips to "Bethel City," 20 cents each. For himsel and oxen, one and a half days, Child charged the liberal sum of $1.42. Daniel CHILD and Apama LYMAN were married on 11 Nov 1804 in Brookfield, Orange, Vermont.19-21 11.
