    3. There are petitions regarding roads, regarding taxes, regarding getting out of prison/jail, all sorts of things. It does not give relationships or family records. But it is so nice to find the signature of an ancestor. Joann Nichols Linda Dabulewicz wrote: > What kind of information is in these documents. 3. Hi researchers, Forrest, thanks for reminding us of the good free genealogy data at the Secretary of State's Office. Please contact me offlist and I will supply the email and/or snail mail addresses. I contacted this office via email. There is a Nye Index (an index to all persons who are mentioned in the Manuscript Vermont State Papers). I am happy to now have a photocopy of 1) the signature of Andrew POWERS [b. ca 1720], my 5 great grandfather, on a Petition for reappointment of Elkanah SPRAGUE as Justice of the Peace, 2) Andrew POWERS' name on 2 VT town charters: Hartland [aka Hertford], Windsor Co., VT, and Pittsford, Rutland Co., VT, and 3) Jonathan POWERS [m. 1820] and his father, Andrew POWERS' signatures on a petition [Vol. 51, page 97] to divert water for a sawmill which was denied in Guildhall, Essex Co., VT, after the War of 1812-14. 3. Rutland Herald Wednesday Morning, December 17, 1930 SPRINGFIELD HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE Overheated Stove Causes Loss of $3000; Family Left Without Clothes SPRINGFIELD, Dec. 16. - Fire, believed to have been started by an overheated stove, today destroyed a two-story dwelling house on Baker Heights here, occupied by John Bouchier and family, with an estimated loss off $3000. The family lost everything but the clothes which they were wearing. There was no one at the house when the fire broke out. Mr. and Mrs. Bouchier and their daughter were visiting at the home of Mrs. Bernice Phillet. Coming from the home of Mrs. Phillet, Bouchier saw flames suddenly burst through the roof of his house. He sounded a fire alarm, but when the department arrived it was found impossible to lay a line to the house, on account of its height from the water. Bouchier saved a horse, which was in a small stable next to the house, but the light frame dwelling was consumed by the flames in less than half an hour. Transcribed by Rebecca W. Tucker
