    1. [VTWINDSO] West Windsor Law Records
    2. I just moved to PA and one of the items I brought along with me was a bunch of duplicate legal papers from a law office in West Windsor. I would like to donate them where they would do the most good. Some of them seem to deal with people in the Cavendish area too. Any suggestions? 1. [VTWINDSO] VT, NH to Fitchburg, MA
    2. If you had Irish ancestors in Windsor County, VT or Sullivan County, NH in the 1800s and they disappeared, you may want to check Fitchburg, MA, which was easy to get to on the railroad. That's what happened to two of my KENT relatives from Springfield, VT (moved in early to mid-1870s), several CARMODY relatives (around 1890), and one CALLAHAN relative (1888) from Charlestown, NH. A state report published in 2006 described a Fitchburg neighborhood called "the Patch" which "was settled in the mid 19th century by Irish families who came to build the railroad and later work in the mills. Modest workers' houses are situated on small lots. The large brick 1869 Gothic Revival St. Bernard's Catholic Church (240 Water Street)...is central to the neighborhood." (_www.mass.gov/dcr/stewardship/histland/reconReports/fitchburg.pdf_ (http://www.mass.gov/dcr/stewardship/histland/reconReports/fitchburg.pdf) ). Ancestry.com has the searchable Fitchburg Sentinel newspaper online, where I found over 100 articles on my family (including obituaries, patents received, school graduations, etc.). The New England Historic and Genealogical Society has searchable original Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910, where I found many records for the family. 1. Re: [VTWINDSO] Timothy Bancroft, Whitney and Wheeler
    2. Hi Joann Thank you. This Lucy Whitney and James Bancroft have a son James that married Fanny Kandell and their son Horace Bancroft married Arvilla Wheeler in Vt. Arvilla Wheeler was the daughter of Amos R. Wheeler and Lydia Adams that lived in Cavendish, Vt. and later moved to St. Charles, Ill. Arvilla was sister of my gg-grandfather Dr. Charles Wheeler. Dr. Wheeler migrated to Kansas but his sister Arvilla Wheeler Bancroft died in Ypsilanti, Mich. in 1888. Some of the information I found on the Bancroft family was thru the DAR and also from St. Charles, Ill. etc. Patty In a message dated 5/15/2008 2:27:17 A.M. 2. I lived in Chester,VT for many years, and I remember Armanala Severance attending many Alumni Dinners, which were held every year in Chester. I believe she lived to be at least 100. For some reason I want to think she was a piano teacher, but at any rate a teacher. She was along in years when I knew of her. Hope this obit might help someone.....December 2, 2003 Severance, Dean C., 80, died December 2, at his home in Northfield. He was born in Chester, September 8, 1923, the son of Dean & Arminala (Parmenter) Severance. Mr. Severance was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army. He joined the 4th Infantry "Ivy" Division in 1944. His division made a successful D-Day landing on Utah Beach in Normandy. He and his division were in sustained combat, having fought in Belgium, Huertgen Forest, the Ardennes and the Rhineland. Mr. Severance was seriously wounded near Cologne on March 2, 1945. Among the many awards and decorations he received for his service were the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and numerous other medals and badges. Mr. Severance had been married to Lois M. Stowell. When he returned home, he enrolled in the University of Vermont’s physics program. He did his undergraduate and graduate studies there, and graduated summa cum laude with a master’s degree in physics. He was a professor of physics at Texas Tech from 1956 to 1961. In 1961, he accepted a position with Norwich University in Northfield, as a professor of physics, retiring in 1982. He served as a member of the Northfield Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1992. Survivors include his two children, Nancy Severance of New York City, James Severance of Barre; his mother, Arminala Severance of Chester; and a close friend, Alice Grupe of Northfield **************Need a new ride? 3. Shelley, you certainly worked hard and found a lot of information on this family! Arminala R. Parmenter born about 1904, married Dean C. Severance born in Weathersfield VT about 1896. He was a clerk in Chester at the time their son Dean Charles Severance was born 8 Sep 1923 in Chester, his mother's first child. This info came from a visit to the VT Vital Records at Middlesex VT, while I was looking for some other Severances. Becky Tucker

He was born about 1806 in VT. I am looking for his parents. I have a strong suspicion that his father was Elijah Morgan Morse and his mother was Hannah Curtis Morse. I wonder if anyone on this list can help me. I understand that the VT town records are fairly complete. I think he was born in Windsor County. In 1810 there was an Elijah Morse in Royalton and in 1810 he was in Norwich. Since only heads of households were mentioned, I don't know if Elias Curtis was one of his children. I did find and Elijah and Hannah Morse on a rootsweb family tree. One source had Elias Curtis listed as a child and others did not. Would Elias's birth be recorded in the town records? Can anyone check for me? 3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of 6 men taken by C. E. Wellman in Chester, Vermont. The photograph was taken outside in front of a home or building and indicates that it is either in Chester or Bellows Falls, VT. The photograph is dated 1904 and identifies the men in the photograph as: Albert MORCE (guessing this is actually MORSE) F. C. PARMENTER Eliet MORCE (guessing this is Eliot MORSE) L. N. PARMENTER L. E. DAY Rob SLOAN And the dog "Stride" identified as well. The men in the photograph appear to range in age from 20's to 60's. Based on limited research I was able to locate quite a lot of information regarding this group of men and have included that information below: Foster C. PARMENTER b. Sept 1876 in VT to parents Lucien PARMENTER (b. Oct 1847 in VT) and Alice R. CUTLER (b. Mar 1857 in VT). Foster married Lulu M. MORRIS about 1903 and together they had two children, Arminala R. PARMENTER b. about 1904 and Alletah E. PARMENTER b. about 1909 both in VT. It appears that he may have also been married previously as noted in census info below. 3. There is a town of Hartford in VT. right above Hartland. It's not a large town; more of a village but it's near the CT. river and has farmlands. I did a google search for Hartford, VT and came up with many links with information. If I remember right, Hartland was once called Hertford but the name was changed because it was so similar to Hartford. Mary Lou vtwindso-request@rootsweb.com wrote: >Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. I havent been following this thread but this post caught my eye. Your Tirzah could be a variation or mis-spelling of Thirza or Thirzah, A relatively common name in the late 1800s. 3. Good point, Bev. I have questioned that because I cannot find a Knight family that has a Tirzah. The only reason I think it may be Knight is because that is what the 1896 letter said (and again, could be transcription error or faulty memory.) I have found no Knight families in CT at the right time, several Knight families in VT, even ones who were judges but none with a daughter Tirzah who married a Simeon. I tried looking at all the judges in VT at that time, especially those named White, Wright, etc, but still cannot find Tirzah's family. Her daughter Sarah Williams Doolittle died in 1889 in IN and her death certificate left the mother's name blank. I just found Sarah's brother Adin in the 1880 census (under Adin William--no "s") living in California so today I requested a death certificate for him, hoping that the mother's maiden name will be revealed or confirmed. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bev Lasure" <vtrealtr@sover.net> To: <vtwindso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2008 6:02 PM Subject: Re: [VTWINDSO] Meadow Lands area > This may be a fooling question, but are you sure Knight is her maiden > name? > If she had been married previously to someone who died she could be using > her married name when she married for the second time.. >> > VTWINDSO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >>> quotes in the subject and the body of the message >> >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >> VTWINDSO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >> quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > VTWINDSO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. This may be a fooling question, but are you sure Knight is her maiden name? If she had been married previously to someone who died she could be using her married name when she married for the second time.. >> VTWINDSO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >> quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > VTWINDSO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Thank you everyone for your very helpful suggestions. Now I have several localities to study and hunt for records: Longmeadow MA, the Great Meadows near East Putney VT, the Newbury area in Orange County VT, the Meadows area of Hartford CT. Here is another twist to pinpointing the geography in question. (I didn't want to complicate my original post with a detail that might be conflicting.) The 1896 letter said that the Williams family lived in Connecticut "on the Connecticut River near Hartford, owned a large landed property in the Valley knows as Meadow Lands..... Simeon .... married Tirzah Knight, the daughter of a wealthy neighbor, also an influential family, some of whose brothers held high judicial offices in Connecticut." This would imply that they were in CT, and not VT (but I have read was the original name of Hartland VT was Hertford, where this Williams family DID live in 1780-1800 time period.) Simeon's parents, Samuel Williams and Lois Allyn Williams are buried in Hartland VT.) But when this branch of the Williams family lived in CT, they were in Stonington, Essex County, CT, not near Hartford. And, two of Simeon and Tirzah's children who lived to the 1880 census listed that their mother was born in MA. That could be an error, but the children, by then 84 and 76, were in different households, so it would be two errors. I would think a family in the 1780s would be more likely to migrate from MA to Hartland VT, not Hartford CT, but I am not as knowledgeable about New England history as I need to be. Was there ever a time when borders were redrawn and what was once MA territory became CT or VT? By the time that Simeon and Tirzah married (about 1785), the Samuel Williams/Lois Allyn family was definitely living in Vermont. So if Simeon married the daughter of a neighbor, as the 1896 letter said, I think it is more likely that they were neighbors in Vermont. Perhaps the story got jumbled over the years and the 1896 letter-writer mixed up places. Would a family from MA be likely to move to Hartford CT or on to less settled land in VT? What do you all think? Thanks!
