    3. Hi Bob Goodrich - you started at the right place. I have the bicentennial editon of A Gazzetteer of Vermont Heritage, published by National Survey, Chester Vt and it says this about Bridgewater: "Pioneers began to settle here in 1779. Deacon Asa Jones did the first surveying and moved his family into town on hand sleds the next winter." Gold was discovered in 1851, later discotinued.. Lead, soapstone and grren talc also were mined here. Zadock Thompson was born here, (he was a Vermont scholar), Hezekiah Smith also born here, founder of Smithville NJ, and Henry G. Smith a railroad owner and capitalist. According to F. W. Beers' 1869 maps of Windsor County, Bridgewater's second settler was Amos Mendall, he married Deacon Jones' daughter. First sawmill was erected by George Joseph Boyce in 1784. A Mr. Southgate started first gristmill in 1780, Joseph Boyce had the first framed house. The first town meeting was held and the town organized March 30th 1785, John Hawkins was chosen town clerk. Population of Bridgewater in 1860 was 1292. Are you looking for any special names, I have the F. W. Beers' maps of 1869 which include names of house owners. I am not sure whether there is History of Bridgewater published, I am sure someone out there will know. BECKY Tucker in Weathersfield and Ludlow.

Son of Samuel SMITH and Elizabeth SMITH. Married about 1657, Wethersfield, CT. The following extracts provide the story of the death of Philip SMITH. >From The Magnalia Christi Americana, by Cotton Mather - 1702. Mr. Philip Smith, aged about 50 years, a son of eminently virtuous parents, a deacon of a church in Hadley, a member of the General Court, a justice in the County Court, a selectman for the affairs of the town, a Lieutenant of the troop, and which crowns all, a man for devotion, sanctity, gravity, and all that was honest, exceeding exemplary. 3. Connecticut River Valley List: (and sister lists) How many of you know that there was a witchcraft frenzy in Springfield,Hampden County,Mass in 1650/1.......40 years before the Salem witchcraft trials ? "Ironically 2 women of the same name: Mary Parsons was involved. One was Mary Lewis who married a Hugh Parsons The other, Mary Bliss who married Joseph Parsons Mary(Lewis) was tried in 1651. She was a Catholic who had been separated from a previous husband for 7 years and got permission to remarry, and the 2nd husband was Hugh Parson who owned a sawmill and was a brick mason. Mary and Hugh had 2 children who died in infancy. It's suspected that the 2nd death drove Mary out of her mind. She accused Hugh of witchcraft and murder. Hugh was also accused by another woman in town who was convienced that Hugh put a spell on her. Mary later broke downand confessed to consorting with Satan and to killing her own baby, and was sent to Boston for trial. At the time, according to Picard, a historian at the Storrowton Village in West Springfield, there had been several stories of mothers in Connecticut smothering their babies and the courts took a hard line on them. Mary Lewis Parsons was condemned to death, not for witchcraft but for infanticide. When the jailers came to take Mary to the scaffold, she was so ill she couldnt move, they came back the next day and she was dead ( doesnt say how). In the meantime, Mary's husband Hugh had been in jail for a year and the jury convicted him of witchcraft but the court in Boston acquitted him in 1652. The other Mary(Bliss)and her husband Joseph Parsons, lived in the area what is now Longmeadow. This Mary apparently was high handed and haughty. Her speech was "forcible and she had domineering ways". When they lived in Springfield, Mary had walked around at night, and exhibiting other odd behavior. She would fall down, dead in her tracks and wake up failing around and not know where she was. (today she probably would be diagnosed as epilepsy or sleep walking but in those days..) Mary and Joseph moved to Northampton in 1656 and lived to regret it. Stories began to circulate about Mary from a visitor from Springfield. Before long, Mary was tried for witchcraft. after her acquittal, Joseph sued for slander the woman most responsible for spreading the rumors about his wife.....that woman was SARAH BRIDGEMAN, who was arrested, fined 10 pounds, and ordered to retract her statments. But the bitterness continued to simmer between the Parsons and Bridgeman families, flared up again in 1672 when Sarah's daughter died after only 2 years of marriage...Sarah had been dead for 2 years by then but the bereaved bridegroom seized the chance to accuse Mary(Bliss)Parsons of witchcraft for a second time. Mary was in Boston prison for 3 years before she was brought to trial, she spoke on her own behalf and was acquitted. By the time Salem was swept up in the witchcraft horror of 1692, Springfield had grown out of the witch scare. The 2 Marys are buried in the old cemetery in Hadley , lie near the judge who acquitted them. Mary "Molly" Webster , of Hadley, whose sour disposition was probably aggravated by the poverty that had befallen her and her husband. She was accused in 1683. in 1685, a gang of boys in the community decided to take matters in their own hands. They dragged Webster out of her house in winter, hanged her until she was nearly dead, rolled her around in the snow, buried her in it and left her for dead. Incredibly, Molly Webster survived and lived another 11 years...maybe out of sheer crankiness." There is much more but due to copyright laws, I just took sections of the story . My apologies.( I had a "Senior" moment) (Growing up in Randolph,VT,know where Norwich U is and it came totally as a surprise to me to recently find it originated from my foremother's home town, Norwich, VT. Also thanks for the info as to what some of the old Norwich, CT buildings are now. Pax! Little did I realize that it originated from Norwich, VT and I have a distance relationship to the founder Capt. Alden Partridge via my Norwich Hatch line. ~~~~~ It started out as the American Literary,Scientific, and Military Academy, founded by Capt. Alden Partridge, 1819. ....In 1825, the academy removed to Middletown,Conn. .......1830, Partridge returns to Norwich and erects a second school (I have to data as to if the one in CT remained there as a school; anybody know ?) ...... 1835, the Academy became "Norwich University" by an act of incorporation granted by the legislature of Vermont. ....... trained many officers for the service of the country. ........1863,"South Barracks' building burned removed to Northfield (Vermont) the following fall (and remains there as far as I know) ~~~Of further interest (to me) Several towns: Randolph, Brookfield, Orange, among others were founded by Grantees of Norwich, VT. ~~~~ My relationship: My grandfather, Myron Eugene Chase, married May Alice Hatch of Norwich, whose line goes back > Abel Partridge Hatch > Amos Partridge Hatch > Adrain Hatch > John Hatch. Elisha Partridge married Margaret Murdock , daughter of Hon. Thomas Murdock and Elizabeth Hatch (sister to John and Joseph Hatch, early settlers of Norwich, VT) I stretch I know but there are other connections which I can't put my finger on right now. ~~~~the above book on the History of Norwich is very informative not only to that town but to other connections. The Norwich Historical Society address PO Box 1680 Norwich, VT 05055 (they are opned only on Wednesdays) Hope the above info is of value/ interest to others. Pax! 3. This is a bit off-topic, and I apologize, in advance, to anyone who takes umbrage with this message. Please feel free to hit your "DELETE" button, now. If all the mail lists grow somber and quiet, in the face of highly publicized tragedies, such as this latest one of JFK, Jr., might the web be a barometer, of sorts, of our worldwide collective empathy? It unites us in our stunned grief, and reflects the horror we all feel, that such a thing could happen, yet again. Individually, and collectively, we understand that we are each touched, and diminished, in some small way, by this loss. The web helps us to enunciate what we feel. Julie Hesson <genpub@iolinc.net>
