Source: Vermont Gazetteer of Vermont Heritage, Nat.Survey Co.,1976 "CHESTER.....first settlement in 1764 and the first charter was granted by Gov.Wentworth of New Hampshire 1744. Another charter was granted in 1761 under the name of "New Flamstead " and the settlers were from Massachusetts (doesnt mention town). In 1766 a charter was issued by New York under the name of Chester and under this charter the lands have been held. The name came from the Earl of Chester, Prince of Wales... One of the early settlers was Thomas Chandler and family in 1764. Chester was the shiretown of Cumberland County which was organized by New York in 1768. The settlers never liked the arrangment that placed them under New York control and on June 5,1770, a party of 30 men stormed the Court House (led by Nathan Stone) and demanded to know by whose authority the court functioned and that a lawyer John Grout be disbarred. The mob seized Grout and took him to Windsor where he was held prisoner and escaped. As result the court was moved to Westminster on May 19,1772. The first presiding judge of that court and caused no small amount of trouble for NY in the form of "Westminster Massacre" was the first settler, Thomas Chandler......." Jeane (and Lists): The book (Vt Gazetteer)doesnt list a Whitehall in Vermont and neither does the Ancestry's REDBOOK: American State, county, town resources. If you look at a map of Vermont and NY....Whitehall is only few miles from the NY and Vt border....and in 1803 the town and state borders were clearly defined between NY and VT ......Vermont's Rutland County it has been since 1781 but PRIOR to that, from 1771-4 it was Charlotte County and the records will be in New York under Charlotte County and later Washington County(1773-8). .....from 1777-8....Rutland County was Rutlandshire and under Bennington County(Vt)... You have your work cut out for you.....he could have been born in Whitehall, NY OR under the jurisdiction of NY but today's Vermont. Your first bet may be contacting the: New York State Library Cultural Education Center Empire State Plaza Albany,NY 12230 as there is where you will find the Charlotte and Washington Counties' land, court, probate records for today's Rutland County in Vermont from 1771-1778. .....if they dont have any information for you then the chances are it could be he was born in Whitehall,NY... Perhaps someone on these lists may have other suggestions......... Good luck!! Cynthia listowner > Cynthia, > I've been hoping for this type of reference. List: The book that I have been sending out brief histories of Vermont towns has a lot of details in it and if you do have Vermont ancestors, you should try locating a book in a bookstore under "history"......perhaps Amazon or Barns Noble on line bookstores may have it. I got mine in a Randolph bookstore last weekend. The book has a 1790 map of Vermont in it and it's amazing to see how rapidly that map filled out in few years. The book also has a chronological calendar of events in Vermont from 1724-1973. It also has a number of old pictures in it.....It list the various industry that have come and gone over the years. The price of the book is $8.95 (worth it) : Gazetteer of Vermont Heritage: a concise account of the discovery, settlement, and progress of interesting and remarkable events in the Green Mountain country.
