There is a website online, "Name Changes in Berkshire County." In 1847, Joseph Crosier Gallup, a resident of Adams, MA had his name changed to Joseph Crosier Marsdale. At the same time his four children and his wife's surname were changed to Marsdale. His wife was Laura Jane Cone. By 1850, he appears to have another wife named Harriet; at least Laura Jane wasn't with him. Somewhere along there she married a Hodges, first name unknown. Joseph was probably the son of Beniah and Sally (Crosier) Gallup, born in 1814 in Halifax, Windham Co., VT. The family later lived in Searsburg, Bennington Co., VT. It is said that Joseph died in Hartland, Windsor Co., VT in 1873. In 1870 he seems to be in Lebanon, Grafton Co., NH. I have not been able to find him buried in the online Hartland cemeteries. I would like to discover why the surname was changed, and other details regarding his life. I have some info on the four children if anyone is interested. Thanks! Joann Nichols
I have posted all the information I have about Thomas except that he named a son Winfield Scott Killam/Killiam. I have not found the scan of this article by Chauncey Richardson from "The Vermont Stand[ard]" from 1862 [?]. I did find a photocopy. The article, "Men of Woodstock: The Cottles," says, "Sylvanus and Joseph married sisters, daughters of Andrew Powers. Both couple [sic] were married at the same time at John Sanderson's (now [in 1862] Wondard [?] R. Fitch's) in the Spring of 1775. All the inhabitants in town were invited, and as the house was small they repaired to the door-yard, and were waited upon in nature's grand saloon, where Sol in his glory could witness the pleasant and happy circle of friends on the bank of old Ottauquechee [sp?]. This was said to be the first wedding in town." I have tried to get a better copy of this article from the offices of the newspaper, but have not received any reply. I am projecting the name of the paper and the date from notes of my aunt, Velma Cottle Musick. Aunt Velma cites "Spooner's Vermont Journal," June 17, 1796, about Andrew, Azubah, and Joseph, on p. 44 of "The Cottle Genealogy" (Kingfisher, OK: privately published, 1965). Do the Allens of Woodstock connect to the Allens of Bridgewater, MA? Betty/Betsey/Elizabeth Allen is a daughter, we think, of Ephraim Allen. However the Betty < Ephraim of Woodstock possibly (probably?) is not the Betty < Ephraim of Bridgewater. Any help? Thanks much -- Andy in DE

** Please do not reply to this message in a way that will send your reply to the list. ** ** I welcome discussion via my private address, or the admin address. ** Hi: I want to remind everyone that all messages sent to this list must have some specific connection to Windsor County, Vermont. That connection may be nearly anything, but it must be related to the county in some way. It cannot be of the variety, "you asked about SMITH in Windsor Co., please check my web site where I have SMITHs in Rhode Island". I also want to remind everyone that promoting sites that sell things, ask for donations, or in other ways involve the exchange of funds, is a gray area that many RootsWeb list admins regard as prohibited commercial activity. I usually ignore posts that are only slightly off topic, or which are only marginally commercial. However, I have put some subscribers on "moderate" who have made a habit of such posts. That means they are free to participate in the list, but the "list robots" will ask me to approve each message before it gets posted. For the great majority of you, this has no impact. I apologize for the interruption. Now, back to digging up ancestors. Darrell VTWINDSO list admin Darrell A. Martin a native Vermonter in exile in Illinois darrellm@sprynet.com

Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Fri. Nov. 10, 1950. GUN KILLS W. KENDALL. South Woodstock Farmer, 29, Dies from Accidental Wound from Own Gun. WOODSTOCK, Nov. 9--Wayne Kendall, 29, South Woodstock farmer, died today from an accidental wound from his own gun while working in the woods. Kendall this morning took his tractor and trailer and went for a load of wood. A gun enthusiast, he took his rifle with him, as was his custom. When he failed to return home at noon, his wife went to look for him, but was unable to find him. She summoned a neighbor, Clyde Woods, South Woodstock garage proprietor, who followed the tractor tracks into the woods and found Kendall lying beside the vehicle, apparently dead. He called Dr. Albert C. Eastman, who came and found Kendall dead as the result of a bullet wound in the head. Apparently Kendall was shot as he was removing his 22 rifle, containing one shell, from the trailer. The gun evidently caught on a chain and went off. Selectmen L. L. Mounce and Rupert Lewis gave permission to remove the body. They said the death was apparently accidental, but turned the case over to Sheriff Melvin W. Moore for investigation. Sheriff Moore ,who was assisted in the investigation by State's Attorney Pelmer D. Ainsworth and Police Chief Wesley Krupinsky, said the death appeared to be "entirely accidental." Kendall was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.Broderick Kendall. His survivors include his wife, the former Lila Read of Thompsonville, Conn., and two children, age two years and six months. Funeral arrangements are pending. Transcribed by,

Hi, All. I am trying to get a comprehensive list of individuals who served in the Hoisington Rangers (also called the Vermont Rangers, NY Rangers), which was headed by my 4th g-grandfather during the Revolutionary War. Below is a list of individuals that I have found from various sources. All the men were from Cumberland County, later divided into Windsor and other southern Vermont Counties. I know the list is not complete, as only Joab Hoisington was listed in the sources I found although I know for sure that the other Hoisingtons served under their father before going on to other units after his death. So, If you have additional names that should be added or spellings that should be corrected, I would appreciate hearing from you. Harriette BTW, you can copy and paste the following into an Excel spread sheet by copying the infomation into the upper left corner of a blank spreadsheet. To convert to a Word table, copy into a Word document and do a "Convert text to table" using Tabs as the divider. Given Name Surname Thomas Abner Elijah Baldwin Seth Baldwin John Bard Benjamin Barnett Henry Barton William Baxter William Bell John Brown Henry Burton Robert Carr Amos Chamberlain Asher Chamberlain Joel Chamberlain William Chapley Charles Crook Samuel Curtis Simeon Darbe (Darby?) Abel Davis Thomas Devine Samuel Eaton John Ellet (Elliot?) Antoney Fosto (Foster?) Jonathan Hadley Samuel Hadley Robert Hardy Joseph Hatch Joseph Hawkins Jesse Heeth (Heath?) Dear Robin -- Do you know the cost of the index? Andy in Delaware
If you had relatives in Springfield, VT, it's quite possible some lived for a time in Charlestown, NH. People seem to have gone back and forth easily. The Charlestown Historical Society now has an index to Frizzell's Second History of Charlestown, NH for sale. The 125-page index has surnames, inferred surnames, surname spelling variations, and numbered buildings from Frizzell. If you would like a copy, contact the CHS at P. O. Box 159, Charlestown, NH 03603. Robin in Maryland **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination. Dining, Movies, Events, News & more. Try it out! Hi researchers, Do you know when L.D. Cox Picture Gallery in Ludlow, VT, was in business? I'm helping Vicki who has some family photo's with no names on them from there. However, if she had approximate dates, she might be able to figure out which ones of her ancestors they were. Thank you, Jan Jordan<jnrose@webtv.net>
