    1. [VTWINDSO] Plymouth cemeteries
    2. Nancy Wygant
    3. Just wanted to let everyone know that I have posted an inventory for the Tyson-Pollard cemetery on the Plymouth website www.rootsweb.com/~vtc/plymo I posted the inventory for the Five Corners cemetery about a month ago, so the website now has inventories for three of the four cemeteries in town, and I hope to have the fourth up soon. I've also put up a page for folks researching in Plymouth to post brief notes about what they are working on, questions and brick walls, etc. Please let me know if you would like to post something about your research on that page - or if you have any other Plymouth material you would like to share. Blessings, Nancy Wygant, Plymouth town host

    1. [VTWINDSO] 1830 census and confusion
    2. I have never been able to find my gr-gr grandfather any earlier than about 1836. Pascal P. Beeby (Beebe) is in the 1840 Barnard, Windsor Co., census, but I haven't found him any earlier. I have copies of land purchases he made ( straight from the town clerk) , and I was rereading them yet again, when something occurred to me. He was buying land in 1830. The documents said Pascal P. Beebe, of Woodstock. Some of the descriptions of the property include names like John A. Pratt, George Rice, Ebenezer Hutchinson and Brace Jones. I can find these people in the 1830 census, AND in Windsor County, but I can't find Pascal Beebe. (of any spelling) On a whim, I did a search for Pas* in Vt. and found a Pascal P. Shattacks in Hartford, Windsor Co. Does this name mean anything to anyone? I have started to wonder if his father died and his mother remarried a Shattucks. There is an older Ephraim Shattacks on the line above Pascal's name. **If** this is Pascal, I don't understand why he would have a census entry for Shattacks, but land deals using the name Beebe. Since I have reason to suspect that Brace Jones *might* be Pascal's father-in-law, the land purchase makes sense I don't understand why the documents say "appeared personally before me" - yet I don't find any other record of his living in Windsor Co. If he came from somewhere else, as an absentee landlord, why would the documents say he was "of Woodstock"? Later documents - about 1835 - say "of Barnard". This makes sense as well since Brace Jones lived in Barnard, and Pascal bought the land next to Mr. Jones - and Mr Hutchinson. Am I missing something obvious, or can anyone explain why he seems to be living in Windsor, but I can find no other record of his being there? BTW - I know nothing about parents. I just know that he bought and sold land with a Josiah Beebe - but Josiah isn't on the 1830 census either. The only "Josiah" I can find in Windsor Co., is a Josiah Tilden - in Hartford, one page away from Pascal Shattacks. Valerie

    1. [VTWINDSO] Barnard migration to Ohio?
    2. I was vainly searching for my Beebe family, when a cryptic phrase caught my eye: the Jones "Family said to have gone to Ohio about 1835 in a Barnard migration." Does anyone have any information about this "migration"? Who and where would be wonderful, but any information would be appreciated. Valerie

    1. [VTWINDSO] Bethel Marriages 1780 to 1857 On-Line
    2. Charlotte M. Davis
    3. Good Afternoon List: I have finally, after several tries, gotten the marriages uploaded to the Bethel Page. This list was divided by groom and bride and except for a few the groom and bride are not connected EXCEPT by year and page. I did find an unexpected ancestor on this list with his wife on the same page but there were TWO other females with the same year and page who could have been his wife if I had not known in advance. The Index for 1857 to 1882 lists full dates for all events and connects the bride & grooms. I will work on this over the next few months and will let you know when it is on-line. 2. Does anybody know if Samuel Nichols was in VT and possibly Guilford. He came from Reading, MA and married Mary Bancroft. There is no death record in MA and since all my other ancestors went to Windsor or Wyndham Co., I felt he may have gone there also. I am not sure of his birth date but he was married in 1775. 3. >From: Lester M Powers <[email protected]> >Subject: [VTWINDSO] Rowland Powell's significant but mysterious other To: Lester and other Powell researchers, I have no idea of the identity of SARAH Powell. I would suggest that probably SARAH, the widow of the late Deacon Joseph Berry, married Rowland V, and became SARAH Powell. If wife Mary (Janes) Powell died between 1813 and 1819, this would be a possibility. According to my notes, Rowland V and Mary had Bradford, John, Anna, Luania, Prosper, Cynthia and Polly. Buried in Delano Cemetery, Hartford VT is Captain Luther Powell's first wife, Mary Ann, died 21 August 1796 at the age of 29. I was hoping that someone would form a posse and check out the Delano Cemetery, leaving no stone unturned (pun intended), to see if Rowland Powell IV is buried there or not. As stated before, I looked, looked and looked. 1. [VTWINDSO] Rowland Powell's significant but mysterious other
    2. Lester M Powers
    3. Charles Anderson wrote: > All I know is that Rowland Powell 5th left Hartford, VT > to Richford, VT. He married Mary Janes, and they had > many children. Well, this new story is coming together amazingly s-l-o-w-l-y, after getting off to a firecracker start, but the state of the game at this time is roughly this. First, cast of characters and link to Windsor County: William Powers, hubby of Anna Burtch, was mostly of Hartford, Windsor Co., VT for his prime-of-life years. He moved to Canada in 1803 and was listed as residing at Lachute, Quebec, Canada in 1810, with a stack of his Burtch in-laws. He moved to Guildhall, Essex Co., VT in 1812, and from there to Pomfret, Windsor Co., VT in late 1815 or early 1816. Luther Powell married, I think in 1799, Theda Powers, and events at Guildhall suggest that Theda Powers might have been a daughter of William Powers and Anna Burtch. Luther Powell was a brother of Charles Anderson's Elisha Powell and a brother of one Rowland Powell 5th eventually of Richford, VT, hubby of Mary Janes. Luther, Elisha, and Rowland 5th, et al, were kids of Rowland Powell 4th of Hartford, Windsor Co., VT. NOW: April 19, 1813: The estate of the late Deacon Joseph Berry, of Guildhall, goes to the Essex District/County probate court. The living Joseph Berry is appointed as administrator of the estate. August 10, 1813: The probate court declares the estate of Deacon Joseph Berry insolvent. Debts are greater than assets. It looks like the heirs of the late deacon are just outta luck. April 22, 1813: The widow of the late Deacon Joseph Berry, SARAH Berry, begs the court for some stuff from her husband's estate -- anything will do. The court grants the widow some bedding and some clothes valued at $51.25, almost half of the value of which is for the two beds. March 6, 1819: SARAH Powell and Rowland Powell of Richford, Franklin County, Vermont, sign a quitclaim deed releasing their interest in the late Deacon Joseph Berry's land to the living Joseph Berry, administrator of the deacon's estate. At the bottom of the deed it says, "N.B. the word 'our' underlined before signing" [referring to "we set our hands..."]. Sarah and Rowland Powell get $200. April 30, 1819: The probate court, which doesn't seem to be in any particular hurry, orders the living Joseph Berry (I suppose the deacon's son) to sell the late Deacon Joseph Berry's land so as to pay off the debts of the estate. The sale is to be held the following May 27, 1819. Administrator Berry had evidently petitioned the court for permission to do this earlier. I would guess that the March 6, 1819 quitclaim from the Powells was in preparation for this sale. May 25?, 1819: Administrator Joseph Berry sells the late Deacon Joseph Berry's land to Thomas Tillotson of New Hampshire for $500. May 26, 1819: Thomas Tillotson of New Hampsire quitclaims the same land back to Joseph Berry for $500. February 22, 1822: Joseph Berry, the administrator guy, sells a portion of the late Deacon Joseph Berry's land to Sarah Powell (Sarah only, with no Rowland mentioned) of Richford, Franklin, VT for $200. This swatch of land just happens to be underneath of the home of Timothy Fairchild. August 6, 1823: Rowland Powell and Sarah Powell of Richford, Franklin, VT quitclaim that swatch of land that Sarah bought back to Joseph Berry for $1 (one dollar). End of chronology. OK. Remember Timothy Fairchild mentioned in the 1822 sale? Well, Timothy Fairchild was the lawyer leading the charge in a lawsuit against William Powers, possibly the father of Luther Powell's wife Theda, Luther being the brother of Rowland Powell 5th of Richford, Franklin, VT, the Rowland that the ever mysterious Sarah Powell was somehow attached to. And this lawsuit is a whole 'nother kettle of moray eels. A kettle that drags in Luther Powell as William Powers' financial champion and all that sort of thing. That seems to have dragged on for years and years and years and years and years and years. There's more, of course. In 1798 John Berry and his wife Elizabeth had a son named James Powers Berry at Guildhall, VT. I have contacted a Berry researcher or two familiar with John and James, but they have no more idea how the Powers got into their act than the Powell researchers know how Sarah got into theirs. They also don't know, or aren't telling, how or if John might attach to Deacon Joseph Berry, also of Guildhall. Of course, for "name pattern" afficionados, William Powers also (we think) had a son James. See how LONG a story this gets to be? And what I write here is only a sideshow to the main events at Guildhall for our Windsor County tribes, not even the tip of the iceberg. For the juicy stuff, we have to turn to the William Johnson who probably died in 1813. Unfortunately, Mr. Johnson is a tough cookie. 1. [VTWINDSO] Rowland Powell bur. Delano Cemetery, Hartford, VT
    2. Charles Anderson
    3. Rowland and Mary (Richardson) Powell are supposed to be buried in the Delano Cemetery, Hartford, VT. I personally visited the cemetery and found a headstone for Mary, but nothing for hubby Rowland could be found. I feel broken-hearted, but I could not see anything that would suggest that Rowland is beside, back of, front of, or anywhere near wife Mary. Rowland is listed in many sources as being buried there: The VT DAR Peabody Index; The History of Hartford VT 1761-1889 by Tucker; The History of Hartford VT by John St. Croix; The VT Historical Proceedings of 1906; History and Genealogies of The Powells of America. One inventory of the cemetery taken in the 1930s only lists Mary as being buried there, but not Rowland. It is a possibility that Rowland's stone tipped over and is buried in the ground, or he never had one to begin with. Rowland died first in 1801 at the age of 70. Mary died Sept 7, 1806 at the age of 77. I don't know what to think. Is there by any chance a disinterested third party that could take a look-see at the Delano Cemetery and see if Rowland is buried there? That being maternal ggrandmother Marian (Daniels) McDowell b. abt 1849/50 VT, the 1st wife of maternal ggrandafther William C. McDowell, b. abt 1851 Scotland . (we have also seen her given name written as "Maryan" in a census extract). . The only reference to her birth that we have come across to date, is apparently associated with the records of maternal grandfather Archie Allen McDowell, b. 9 Nov 1875 at Greensboro VT, which apparently suggest that his mother, Marian Daniels, was born in Fairfield, Franklin County, VT . However, the Fairfield Town Clerk, advises that they have no known record of her birth etc. there. . 1. [VTWINDSO] Paydirt
    2. Lester M Powers
    3. Charlie There's a Charles Anderson, somewhere on this list's list of members I think, one at [email protected], who proudly boasts Elisha Powell. Izzat you? "Paydirt" here, my paydirt that I alluded to earlier, is just so very much dirt, such volume, that while I've thought of boastfully recounting it to the list, I just haven't figured out how to boil it down to something that might fit into a post. I haven't even had a chance to write it up into my own family history book. I think that my findings may very well apply to others -- as research techniques mostly. My William Powers vanished in 1803 -- turns out he went to Canada. I think a bunch of other fellow Windsorcountyites might find that their guys did the same thing, though probably earlier, in the 1790s. It had to do with a cheap-land boom up there. My William came back. I'll betcha others did too. War of 1812, you know. He came back through a back door -- Guildhall, Vermont -- and I wonder how many others did something like that, though via some other back door. Why Guildhall, of all places? Dunno yet, but I smell an in-law there. Can't find 'em yet, but there's signs. But, Guildhall just keeps on pouring out stuff. If you're the Elisha Powell type of Anderson, then did you know that Rowland Powell 5th had an extra wife? Well, he did. Evidence is at Guildhall, VT, of all places. She could have been born a Berry, a prominant but flat- broke outfit up there. The Berrys liked to die "insolvent." Did you know that the Powells may have played hardball with town lawyers? Sure looks like it. Guildhall again. Did you know that folks who lived and died at places like New York state and Massachusetts and New Hampshire had their probate hearings at Guildhall, Vermont? Am I the only one who can't find his 3-greats granfather's probate? Would others like to know why the dad-gum a probate might be done way, way, way, way, WAY off yonder? (No, I haven't gotten to the answer to that yet, but I have access to documents that might serve as examples now. *IF* I can figure that one out, it might serve as a new research technique for others.) The drama of this Powers thing, with the Powells dragged into it by the way, is now an epic that covers four counties in two states (not to mention Canada, just to make it international), with another state possibly about to get into the act. All of it is hard slogging through microfilms at my local FHC. The eyestrain is amazing. I am feeling like a man who has long been in a coma suddenly waking up under Niagara Falls. Directly under. I haven't even had time to read all the relevant-to-my- guys Guildhall material yet. I find stuff, jot down a reference in my notes, and keep going, fixin' to come back to it later while I wait for the Pittsfield, VT and Massachusetts films I suddenly need (haven't decided about New York yet -- it's in on this too). Whew!
