    1. [VTWINDSO] Visit to Woodstock
    2. Thanks Richard. I will be driving from RI, and only have 2 days (almost) there. I need to be in Plymouth, MA by the evening of the 6th. I am sure I won't get to go north to Burlington or Lake Champlain, but will definitely the Quechee Gorge, and perhaps Middlebury. Helen

    3. Hi Helen: If you like horseback riding and want a tour of South Woodstock with lots of history, you can try Kedron Valley Stables. My sister works there - Cindy. If you want her to help you tour the cemeteries in South Woodstock, she did so with me in April and knows where they all are - just give her a call at the stables or email me and I will give you a phone number. Chase, dentist, of this town (Bethel, Vermont) has invented and just received a patent for an improved plate for artificial teeth which does away with the usual thick plate covering the roof of the mouth, instead of which is a thin plate of metal so fastened to the side of rubber which holds the teeth that by this combination the adaptability, or close fit of a rubber or celluloid plate is obtained and at the same time the conductibility of a metal plate. 1. [VTWINDSO] Regarding some Green Mountain shenanigans
    2. Lester M Powers
    3. A recent post hinted that a notary cannot, or ought not, be her own customer. Interesting thought. It suddenly reminds me of a question that I pondered the other day regarding the exciting adventures of my Vermont ancestors: Can an auctioneer bid at his or her own auction? OK, not really the same question, but both are legal loops of a sort, or circular transactions. Long-way around for the following poser: Deacon Joseph Berry (hereinafter "Deacon Berry") died at Guildhall, Essex Co., Vermont about 1812 or 1813. (Wrong list, WINDSO ain't ESSEX, I know, but the Essex list is, let us say, a very peaceful list, not given to action, and the events came home to roost at Windsor Co. later.). Anyway, Joseph Berry, probably Deacon Berry's son (thus Joseph Jr.), was the executor of the estate. Deacon Berry's probate dragged on forever. Two years after it started, his widow got all of $50 in beds and bedding, while the estate was declared bankrupt (debts exceeded assets). I suppose she set up the beds and bedding in a public park somewhere, because she was on her own otherwise. Afterwards, she seems to have married Rowland Powell 5th, formerly of Hartford, VT but since moved to Richford, VT. And the probate dragged on and on. Joseph Berry got a quitclaim deed from Mrs. Powell (presumably the widow Berry), then got the court's permission to sell Deacon Berry's land the following May 27, 1819. I assume that Joseph Berry would sell Deacon Berry's land at auction, and that Joseph would be the auctioneer, and that the proceeds would be used to pay off the Deacon's creditors. ONE DAY BEFORE the court-authorized date, on May 26, 1819, Joseph Berry sold Deacon Berry's land to some guy in New Hampshire for $500, and the same day the New Hampshire guy sold the land back to Joseph Berry again also for $500. Now, am I justified in assuming that Joseph did this little trick because he couldn't bid at his own auction? Was it a no-no for auctioneers to bid on the items they were asking for bids on? (Kinda like Wendy not being able to notarize her own affidavit.) Further, would I be out of line if I accused Joseph of selling/buying the land one day ahead of the court- ordered sale date so as to have few or no competing bids? Was Joseph Berry pulling a double fast one? Or is my predisposition for wild yarns running away with me? The land was being sold, I gather, to pay the debts of the estate, and I think Joseph would otherwise inherit that land. Why couldn't Joseph just pay the debts and take the land? (No, it is not stated how big the debts were, so I don't know if the estate's debts exceeded the $500 presumably handed over to the probate court after the sale.) If this was a fast one, wouldn't someone notice it in the deeds book? Wouldn't the town clerk do more than just wink? Or, is there another explanation for the whole thing? It is to be noted that it appears that the widow Mrs. Deacon Berry married Luther Powell's (of Pomfret) brother, that Luther Powell was allied with William Powers (of Hartford and Pomfret at various times) against a lawsuit brought by the Johnsons led by lawyer Fairchild, that lawyer Fairchild built his house on Deacon Berry's land at some unknown time, and that a few years later (after the 1819 double sale) there was a mysterious struggle among the Powells over the land under the opposing lawyer Fairchild's house suggesting attempts at levering up an unfair advantage in court. So, there were plenty of seemingly shady doings going on, whirling about all this stuff. But that's for later. Can any experts on the fast-and-loose out there tell if the May 26, 1819 double-and-a-day-early sale really was a Berry fast one? Or am I just a romantic? For 4 years, from time to time I have asked several lists if anyone had the rosters. Unfortunately no one offered to share the information with all who would have loved to see it. Rather like the case of the List of the Americans killed at Bunker Hill. Not one person was good enough to submit it. And, several had it (was thoroughly discussed in a NEHGS register.) When I finally obtained all the information, I posted it, and, as usual freely shared it. That List is also now available on request. (Killed at Bunker Hill) You can use what I am sending, but in future, you should be good enough to announce what you have available, rather than hoarding it to yours. A quick check of your website shows you have the officers only. This file has the complete list of the Enlisted Men. I will send it under separate cover, as an attachment of text, 46 kbs. Nor, it appears, did you read the Ethan Allen website too thoroughly. Or, perhaps you have just chosen to respond to it "off-handedly" instead. (A simple apology for your impugnings will do and would be most graciously accepted.) By the way, I see that your original posting went to a NH Sullivan County list originally, if I'm not mistaken? I am not subscribed to that list (nor have I ever been, to my knowledge - would you like a sworn notarized statement to that effect? I'm a notary, myself, but I would have to pass on signing my own affidavit!) Now, back to the Green Mountain Boys. Hopefully, in the interest of genealogy, someone might be interested in actually comparing the lists that are 'out and about' and attempt to compile a more comprehensive one. It sounds as if the Ethan Allen homestead & museum is attempting to do this. Hear, Hear. Wendy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Excuse me? You certainly have made some remarkable assumptions and jumped to some interesting conclusions, simply because I posted a link to a website giving lots of "Green Mountain Boys" names? (Wonder where all that came from?) I assumed the info would be useful to you and others. And I bet it will be! To correct your erroneous conclusions: 1. That is not "my" website. (Ethan Allen.) I found it (Ethan Allen homestead museum site) *after* I had read your posts here just now because I didn't see my Noah Lee listed in what you submitted and I went looking for more on the subject! (Forgive me I have sinned.) 2. I probably never saw any previous posts on this or any other list that you mention in your interesting but misguided diatribe because I may not have been subcribed or, heaven forbid, might not have read them if I was!!!! (Sin #2.) 3. The listing on the site I mentioned (Ethan Allen - which, again, is not *MY* website) LISTS a ton of Green Mountain Boys names.......including my Noah Lee, which yours does not. Not just officers (at least the one I read). (No sin here. Phew.) 4. I have been sharing genealogy for over 30 years. Thanks. (Three sins, I'm out. Straight to hell it is for me.) (Heavens to Mergatroid. Lighten up, woman.) 3. Hi Janice, Thank you for posting this. Everyone wants to be a Green Mountain Boy, still, I think! It was interesting to see this. Where did it come from? (Apologies if you already posted the original source.) The Ethan Allen homestead museum website has a listing of those that were known to have been with Allen at Fort Ticonderoga. My 4th great-grandfather, Col. Noah Lee (then a "Captain"), of Castleton, was among them. He corresponded with Ethan Allen. Interestingly, he is not listed in your 4 parts posted here. If you'd like to compare your listings to that of the site mentioned above, the url is: http://www.ethanallenhomestead.org/HISTORY/related.htm ----- Original Message ----- Wendy Jones de Geofroy From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 27, 2002 8:36 PM Subject: Re: [VTWINDSO] Green Mountain Boys - Part 2 > Welcome.
