Obviously, since their information is published in a promotional book which can be purchased by the general public, the six fine people in question should have no objection to their names appearing on this mailing list. However, I would suggest that telephone numbers might be best left off. Darrell A. Martin VTWINDSO-L list administrator [email protected]

    2. Oops, sorry. Just caught the part about White River Valley. Some of the professional genealogists listed in the APG book who specialize in Vermont genealogy do not live in Vermont. Two are in Massachusetts, the other is in Virginia. However, the following are Vermonters: 1. Richard B. Butler, of Brattleboro, VT. His specialty is missing heirs. 2. Alice Eichholz, of Montpelier, VT specializing in 18th, 19th and 20th Century Vermont and New England. 3. Patricia Haslam in Stowe, VT If you want the name of the others, or more details of those listed above, please contact me directly. Joan Giampoli [email protected]

    2. Hi! While at the Family History Fair in NYC on Sunday, I won a door prize -- a soft cover book entitled "Directory of Professional Genealogists 2001-2002" put out by APG, the Association of Professional Genealogists. There are six Professional Genealogists who specialize in Vermont genealogy listed. If you send me the name of the city or town in which you live, I will send you the name and address of the genealogist closest to you. Joan Giampoli

    3. Hi Harriott, Because you know a lot about Norwich, do you know of an Emma Reynolds born in Norwich in June of 1853? I was not able to get to Vermont this summer and am searching for her ancestors. She married Julius H Porter. She is buried in Langdon, NH's "west" or "lower" cemetery. She had 11 or 12 children so there are a lot of descendants who would like to know her ancestry. Thanks! 3. Through the years "many" folks have asked me if or do I know of any "professional" genealogist. Because I volunteer for usgennet & the local historical societies; and because rootsweb is "non-commercial", I steer away from the issue. However, there are significant numbers out there who are looking for someone, I would like to at least refer them to a "list"; if there is such a thing. My primary queries are Norwich & Randolph, including those in between; aka White River Valley. Thank you Harriet Chase in picture postcard perfect central Vermont; bright, chilly and leaves turning.

    1. [VTWINDSO] IMPORTANT from the list admin
    2. Darrell A. Martin
    3. Greetings: ** DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT GOES TO THE LIST ** There are two things going on regarding our list that I want you to know about. However, and this is important, this IS *NOT* AN INVITATION TO DISCUSS THESE ISSUES *ON* THE LIST. Failure to abide by this restriction may result in a stay in the Reject File for the list, which I hate doing to subscribers -- it's a pain, and easily avoided. The list is for genealogy. Please send me a *private* e-mail if you have questions or concerns. ** VIRUS ALERTS AND DISCUSSIONS ARE FORBIDDEN ON MY LISTS ** Try [email protected] First, there are two nasty and confusing viruses/malicious programs/whatevers making the rounds. If you have not updated your anti-virus software in October -- STOP -- DO IT NOW -- I'll still be here when you get back. The problem with these two bugs is that they are quite good at making it LOOK like a message came from a RootsWeb list. Be advised that no RootsWeb list can transmit a virus. Also, no RootsWeb list can transmit *any* kind of an attached file (although some e-mail clients display list Digests "as though" they were attached files -- they aren't). Lastly, the size of these infected messages runs over 50kb. I do not permit messages that large for any of my lists, so on many counts, if you get an infected message, it did not come through a RootsWeb mailing list. Another thing is that at least one of these products of idiocy tells you lies, about where the message is coming from and what it is about, so you cannot even say for sure that a list member is infected, either! For example, if John Doe gets an infected message that looks like Jane Roe posted it to the MOE-L list; not only did it not get on the MOE-L list, Jane didn't post it. Rather, Joe Bloe is an irresponsible person who disdains the use of anti-virus software. He has messages from the list (which may be copies taken from the archives, or may have been forwarded to him by someone else), messages from John, and messages from Jane, on his computer. The virus picks and chooses addresses and subject lines and then lies, lies, lies about them. ** REMEMBER, DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOUR REPLY GOES TO THE LIST ** Secondly (and if you are not subscribed to MSN or Hotmail the rest of this message does not apply to you), a lot of RootsWeb messages are being bounced by MSN and/or Hotmail for reasons that puzzle the RW techs no end, not to mention legions of list admins. If you are being involuntarily unsubscribed from the list time after time, and you are an MSN or Hotmail user, may I suggest that you switch to some other provider? If this is not practical, then contact me *PRIVATELY* for some things to try -- but they don't work for some people, unfortunately. I apologize for the necessity of making these announcements. And now, back to dead ancestors. Darrell RootsWeb List Admin - 5 VT and 1 MA location lists Darrell A. Martin - 17 surnames lists [email protected] - 1 software list

    2. Does anyone have any information on the ancestors of Fannie Baldwin, b. 7/24/1815, d. 4/9/1868? Fannie was married on 9/3/1834 in Chester, VT to Orice Whitcomb Dwinell. She died in Grafton, VT and is buried in Grafton. I believe her parents were Philinda Harvey and Nahum Baldwin, but cannot confirm. I would love to have the name of her grandparents, if possible. 3. This is an addendum to my original query of trying to verify the parents of Eunice Emma Smith. I did find her marriage to Melvin GW Newton on the FHL film# 0028354- Hartford, Vt. Vitals 1764-1863. This film is a goldmine if you're not familiar with it. Ken Newton

    1. [VTWINDSO] Parents of Eunice Emma Smith
    2. Ken Newton
    3. My query: I am trying to identify the parents of Eunice Emma Smith b. 1807 Hartford, Vt. who married 1831 in Dothan, Vt. Melvin GW Newton b. 1809 Hartford, Vt. The father of Eunice must be a Sylvanus Smith (one of their children is Sylvanus Smith Newton), but which one? (1)The Sprague Families in America states: "Amey Sprague, born 1764, married Prb. Sylvanus Smith a farmer". (2) The Newton Genealogy... descendants of Rev. "Roger: Sylvanus Jr. born_. Amy Sprague (I suppose the daughter of Jesse and Esther..." (3) Unfortunately the parents given for this Sylvanus Smith (Simeon Smith and Rachel Strong) have him born in 1775 making him an unlikely 11 years younger than his wife. (4) There is a prominent Sylvanus Smith in Norwich, Vt. 1790 census, and Hartford 1800 and 1810 censuses. Not found in the1820 census. His age in these censuses has him born before 1755. This more likely matches the age of Amey as the wife's age progresses in the censuses.(5) A Sylvanus Smith appears in the 1889 History of Hartford and in Hartford Town Meeting minutes (6) Another mystery: I recently rented the FHL film 0028354: Vital Statstics of Hartford 1764-1863. In the index for Vol 3 I found a reference to :the marriage of Melvin GW Newton and Eunice Smith on page! 152. Hoping to find the parents I looked for page 152 and it wasn't there. The film consists of mostly town meeting minutes, with very few vital record.. I put the film on indefinite loan to be able to pore over it at my leisure. Can anyone help me prove who the parents of Eunice Emma Smith are? Thanks, Ken Newton- San Diego

    2. Lester M Powers
    3. I may have found a new but distant relative today and thought I'd ask if anyone knows about him: Charles Booth SHEDD, born December 30, 1875 at Weathersfield, VT; father Charles W. Shedd b. Sherburn, VT; mother Olive __?__ b. Florida, MA. The 1850 census of Sherburn, VT teaches that a Charles W. Shedd, age 8 months, resided there at the household of Charles D. Shedd and his wife Eliza __?__. So, maybe Charles D. Shedd of Sherburne was the dad of Charles W. Shedd of Weathersfield who was the dad of Charles Booth Shedd of Weathersfied. Charles D. did live at Weathersfield awhile before scooting over to Center Randolph to sell groceries and other hardware, like saws and churns. Eliza __?__ (b. Massachusetts) was the first wife of Charled D. Shedd, C.B.'s presumed grandpa. Charles D. married second Eliza Adelaide Powers, daughter of Jonathan Powers and Elizabeth Daly of Allovertheplace, VT (Eliza A. Powers changed her name to Adelaide E. Shedd, when she married, so as not to be second Eliza as well.) And Jonathan was probably the brother of my Benjamin B. Powers of Hartford, VT, both probably sons of William Powers, probably son of Andrew of Woodstock, VT. So, C.B. would be my Ben's stepgrandnewphew, or so. Just thought I'd ask. 3. Hi Everyone, I was recently contacted, through our Stockbridge website ( http://www.rootsweb.com/~vtgenweb/vtwindsor/StockbridgeVT.htm ) by someone looking for information on her ancestors, Abel Curtice and Sarah Mugford who had lived in Stockbridge. I was able to help with information from our town records, but I also had saved a 1999 posting about Stockbridge (NoTown) lead mines, which included information from a Marlene McIntyre who had lived in Rochester at one time. Marlene was also descended from Abel and Sarah, through their son Phineas, who is also the ancestor of Maureen, who contacted me. I tried sending an email to Marlene's 1999 address - it didnt bounce, but I havent had an answer, several days later. If anyone knows Marlene, could they please ask her to contact me? Thanks, Barbara Vellturo
