Windsor County is the only Vermont county with a published probate index, and it would be a shame if those who put the effort into producing it did not receive their just reward. This book was compiled by Scott Andrew Bartley and his mother Marjorie Bartley. It was published by the Genealogical Society of Vermont and is available from them. I believe by going to the GSV website, http://www.rootsweb.com/~vtgsv/ you will be able to find details on what they have available. Joann Nichols Brattleboro, VT former president of GSV

Hi Darrell: Thank you for the offer of probate lookups! I am NOT suppose to be doing genealogy while going to school but I could not resist asking. I spent a month in Vermont in April and found a lot of information but as I go back further it gets more sparse. I found the burials while there but the death certificates for Asahel and Eliphalet have eluded me even with searching the town records. The clerks there are wonderful by the way. There is a confusing bunch of Asahel, Eliphalet, and George's in this DAVIS family. I have attached the information below. One question I do have is about the probate book. Exactly what information does it have? It does sound like it is indexed - by date or name? Where did you get your copy? Thank You for taking the time to do these for the list. It is much appreciated and I do know it takes a lot of time. Sincerely, Charlotte M. Davis Fairbanks, Alaska [email protected] Host for Bethel, Vermont http://www.rootsweb.com/~vtcbethe/ 1. Hello, "Vermont Place-Names" by Esther Munroe Swift says, p. 562, that it has always been considered most probable that Windsor Vt was named after Windsor CT, since some of the Windsor VT grantees were from CT. The CT town of that name was, in turn, named for Windsor in England, the home of many early settlers in Mass. Bay & Connecticut colonies. Swift also raised the possibility that Windsor Castle in England may have been a motivation. Darrell, The Slafter would be Edmund Farwell Slafter and the dates would be prior to 1800. If it wouldn't be to much trouble could you e-mail me the names of the other Slafter/Slater's to check them against my Slafter/Slater data base. Gratefully, Rich Van Wagenen in Nebraska
Greetings: I *think* that I have caught up to all the Windsor County probate index book lookup requests. So, if you have sent one and I haven't answered it, it may have gotten lost in the shuffle. Please resend it. This is *NOT* a "last chance" announcement. I own the book, and it isn't going anywhere [grin].
