List, looking for some ideas on finding my lost ancestor.. Here is what I do know: Leicester Emerson or Lester Emerson of the Reading area. He had a farm out on the Brown schoolhouse road. He was born July 02, 1796 in Reading, the son of John and Prudence (Crowdrey) Emerson. He died according to the Crowdrey book on February 22, 1886 in Reading area and Lester is mentioned in Child's "Gazetteer of Windsor County, VT." with a farm, off route 29, in Reading, VT. He died alone on February 22, 1886. He was married to Olive Wood but family moved to Minnesota in early 1850's but Lester turned back (found him in the 1850 Illinois Census then he was in the 1870 Vermont census in Reading). I did find an old map when I was in Reading at the local hardware store (go figure).. But I have yet to find a death record or possible place he might be buried. There is a cemetery on the old homestead where John and Prudence are buried but no marker for Leicester (maybe noone put up a stone for him). I have looked in Middlesex at the Vital Records and Darrell did not come up with a probate record in the index. Any other possible places to look? Hope to get back there again next year. -- Regards, Jerry
Darrell, looking for Pratt's in Windsor: Samuel, Mary, James, etc.. are there any listed in the probate index. Also, thanks for looking up the Emerson's. -- Regards, Jerry

Hi List, Searching for MARTHA PIERCE who was born on July 15, 1787 Woodstock, Windsor CO. VT and died Aug. 24, 1827 in Pavilion Center, Genesee CO. New York. She married ROSSWELL SLAYTON in 1804 in Woodstock, VT. Martha may have been born in Brookfield, Massachusetts but not sure. I have no idea who her parents were or siblings. Thanks, Nancy Helvey
Hi Darrell, Thank you for your time and effort in looking up the probates! Would there happen to be a DOWNING? Thanks! Jill

Darrell, Thanks a million for the information on Cyrel/Cyril GREEN probate. It is a terrific help to me. Audrey

I hope that things are not asked privately just for the sake of a large amount of E-Mails. I read them all with interest in the hopes of finding a relative of one of my ancestors. I have" Early Families of Weston, VT published by the Weston Historical Society and "The Bolster Family of Londonderry and Weston, VT" by Raymond Taylor in 1925. There is also a chair belonged to Jared Bolster that is now at the Weston Historical Society. I have many other lines as well as the Bolsters that were in VT. Most were Windsor County but a few strayed up to Windham. A few of my Windsor surnames are Abbott, Cox, Diggins, Read, Rogers, Nichols and Heald/Haild. Cheers - Marilyn in Cold, Wet, Dreary IL
Hi Darrell, I just went over to a Windsor Co. website and seen that in 1810 there were 2 different RIDER families. I'm hoping that perhaps a Rider Probate can be found. Is that o.k. with Darrell? > > Best, > > Dawn Hi, Dawn: I have a dual hat on here, as a resource and as the list admin. First, if anyone would *prefer* to ask me privately, I would not object; and a private request will get a private reply. However, I like to see answers to questions to appear on the list and not just to go to the one who asked. Part of the beauty of a public list is that it is not just a query board, which I find as boring as watching paint dry. I have had major breakthroughs in my own research come from two other people corresponding about a topic that I did not, at first, think was of any interest to me. There is also the issue of the archives. Many times someone will read a message there, not see the answer, and then send another message asking the same question -- and the one who provided the answer the first time may, or may not, still be able to help. Even when it is not in question and answer format, the activity on the list is a fabulous resource for Windsor County researchers, present and future. As far as the volume on the list goes, that will die down soon enough. These things tend to run in waves. I get over 300 e-mails on a *slow* day ... one list I subscribe to, TMG-L, once sent me over a dozen DIGESTS in one day. No, we don't want VTWINDSO-L to get that big, just for the sake of size! But it's like the weather in Vermont, if you don't like it, wait a minute [grin]. Darrell probate looker-upper and list admin [email protected]
