I earlier forgot my Revolutionary War Veterans. They include Baruch Bolster, John Bolster, Thomas Read, Samuel Nichols, Oliver Diggins, Ebenezer Farnsworth, Frederick Rogers and William Cox --- all of VT. Marilyn IL

Thank You Darrell, My father, Detmer Mckinley, served at an Armed Guard in the US Navy during WWII. He was on the merchant ships carring supplies and fuel to the soldiers on the European front. These brave men were the only military presence on-board ship. There were less than 25 men per ship. He just missed death several times and loss many of his fellow soldiers when these ships were hit. He will be 80 years old this birthday in December. Our family is blessed to have him as a part of it. Thanks again. Molly McKinley
Remembering Alfred Bolster of VT in Stannard's 16th Regiment and at Gettysburg. Also my uncle who was dropped into Belgium all alone during WW 2 as a lookout for the paratroopers. His wife kept every letter he had written home and I have copies of two volumes. His unit found a Concentration Camp. They forced the townspeople to bury the bodies "in a proper manner" and of course, the townspeople pled innocent. Fly your flags today and May God Bless America and all of her Veterans. Marilyn IL
This may not be an actual Veteran as yet: However, my grandaughter Heidi is a United States Marine stationed in Okinawa. The Marine Corps Birthday was last week and she attended the Marine Birthday Ball complete with dress blues, and a huge cake to feed the entire base. She also recently received a promotion to Lance Corporal. Her MO is "legal aid" which is like a paralegal in civilian life. But, of course, every Marine is always a Combat Soldier. Heidi's grandfather was a paratrooper during the Korean War. Semper Fi for all Veterans Marilyn in IL
I am currently researching the BLANCHARD, MORSE, CHESLEY, HERRICK & PRIEST lines. Most come from the Sharon/Norwich area of Vermont. My current brick walls are: Hiram King Blanchard (adopted?) b. June 6, 1842 in Royalton, VT, d. May 29, 1876, a check of Royalton births finds no Hiram Blanchard. Family rumour has it he was adopted and original surname was WATERMAN. Parents listed on marriage cert. as Joseph & Harriet Blanchard. Death cert. lists him as illegitimate. Pension case file yeilds nothing. Found a Joseph & Harriet Blanchard with a child named Hiram TUCKER in 1850 Sharon, VT census, same family in 1860 census lists Hiram BLANCHARD. Probate court has no record of adoption for Hiram BLANCHARD, WATERMAN, KING or TUCKER. Married Eliza A WHITE. Buried Beaver Meadow Cemetery, Norwich, VT. Emma J BLANCHARD (?) wife of Orison R. HUNTLEY. She is listed only as E.J. on daughters (Flora) b.c. Listed as Emma in census. Friend of family says her last name was BLANCHARD. A check of vital records comes up empty. Her father was born in Canada (English). Any help or leads appreciated---Thanks---Allie
Darrell, What a wonderful way to honor those who served our country! I am deeply tied to Francestown being a direct descendant of Timothy Morse, Timothy Gay, and Amos Flint, all early settlers of Windsor Co, VT. I would like to honor my late father, Lawrence F. Turner, who served during WWII and then made the Air Force his career. "He entered the Army Air Corp at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO 1942. He was selected to train in the Army Air Corps and received 30 days basic training while there. About 15 Nov 1942 Pvt. Turner was transferred to Buckley Field, Colorado where he attended and graduated from a 6 weeks course in Fighter Armament. Upon completion of this course, and on volunteering for Gunnery School, he went to Lorado Field, Texas and successfully completed the Gunnery Course. At graduation he was awarded gunners wings and the rank of Sergeant. On 1 Apr 1943, Sgt. Turner was assigned to Davis Monthan Field, Tuscon, Arizona, where he became a combat crew member on B-24 type aircraft, with specific duty as tail gunner. About 5 months of phase training followed at Davis Monthan, Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Topeka Air Base, Kansas. During this time (July 1943) he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. At Topeka, Sgt. Turner became a member of the 392nd Bomb Group along with his crew and preparation began for overseas movement. With departure about the middle of August 1943 and arrival some 2 weeks later, Sgt. Turner and crew was at Wendling, England, an obscure Air Base in the North Central British Isles. Subsequently, Sgt Turner completed 30 combat missions over Europe in a period of 12 months. Awards received were: 1. The Distinguished Flying Cross 2. Five Air Medals for destruction of enemy arcraft 3. European Theatre of Operations Ribbon with three battle stars Having completed the combat tour he returned to the United States upon the Queen Mary in September 1944. The first duty station after return was Lowry Field, Colorado where he again was enrolled in Armament School (B-24 Specialized). After graduation he was assigned to the Base Transient Alert section for approximately 6 months, gaining some experience in aircraft mechanics" on 29 Sep 1942. He re-enlisted at McChord AFB, Washington with the grade of Staff Sergeant in 1946. While awaiting a permanent assignment, he trained on the job in aircraft engine mechanics for 3 months, on T-6 and T-11 type aircraft. He was then transferred to the 505th Aircraft Control and Warning Group where he assumed the duties of Acting First Sertgeant for the 11th Radar Calibration Detachment with 26 airmen under his supervision. While in this position he attended a Base Typing and Correspondence School and graduated int eh top half of his class on 29 Aug 1947. He subsequenty served at Mountain Home AFB, ID, Travis AFB, CA, McConnell AFB, KS, Anderson AFB, Guam and Plattsburgh AFB, NY. During his military career he received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Distingished Flying Cross, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, European Theater with three bronze battle stars, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal with one silver loop, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four bonze oak leaf clsters, USAF Noncommissioned Officer Academy Graduate, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal He was honorably discharged from the Air Force after recovering from his first heart attack. He served 21 years, 3 months and 26 days. He died 11 Sept 1987 and was buried with full military honors. Audrae Turner Mathis
Hello List: Thanks Darrell for the opportunity to remember family on Veteran's Day. I would like to honor my maternal uncle, Cecil Forrest Berno, now age 65, who retired from the US Navy to landlocked Arizona. I would also like to honor my brothers Steven Gordon Davis and Gary Leonard Davis who served in the US Army during the early to mid 1970's. We were the first Davis's in our surname's direct line to serve our country since the American Revolution. We all served for one year at the same time. Sincerely, Charlotte M. Greetings from your list admin: Tomorrow, Monday November 11, 2002 is Veterans Day in the Unites States of America. It used to be called Armistice Day to celebrate the end of the Great War, now known as World War One. Dear George, According to "The Windsor County, Vermont, Probate Index 1778-1899," the court dealt with the estate of Elkanah Stuart (recorded as Suart) of Barnard in 1783 (not necessarily the year of death). That is in the Hartford Probate District. (Windsor County has 2 Probate Districts.) Elkanah died intestate. His case is recorded in volume 1. Samuel Steward or Stewart (the names are indexed jointly) was also of Barnard and also died intestate. His case was recorded in 1813, in volumes 4 and 5. Also in 1813 a number of Stewards/ts were named in Guardianship proceedings: Daniel, Deborah, Elizabeth, Emerly, Lyman and Sally. John Steward/t was of Barnard when he died intestate; his case was entered in 1841 in volume 14 and again in 1852 in volume 20. Despite there being no wills, the estate documents would probably have useful data. Good luck, Edith [email protected] At 10:31 PM 11/6/2002 -0500, you wrote: >Looking for information on the following Stewards (also spelled Stewart or >Stuart) who appear in Barnard between 1779 and later. > >Elkanah Steward was listed on a list of individuals that attended the second >town meeting of Barnard in Mar. 1779. Looking for information on the following Stewards (also spelled Stewart or Stuart) who appear in Barnard between 1779 and later. Elkanah Steward was listed on a list of individuals that attended the second town meeting of Barnard in Mar. 1779. By 1790 he does not appear on the First Federal Census. John and Samuel Steward; John and Samuel Steward appear on a List of Freeman in 1791. On the 1790 census Samuel appears as a head of household. John does not appear on a census until 1800 at which time him and Samuel both appear as heads of households. In 1820 Samuel does not appear on the census. His widow does though her name was Sarah. Need assistance in finding out if Samuel, John, and Elkanah left wills in Barnard. Elkanah probably died between 1779 and 1790. Samuel died between 1810 and 1820 as I believe his sons started migrating to Chautauqua Co., NY during this time frame. John showed on the 1840 census at age 70 - 80. Can anyone assist me in my search? George Drennon
. Good Morning List, . I am seeking your assistance in determining just who my gggrandfather Charles Eastman, the husband of Lucy Ann Weeden, really was. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/g/r/e/Joyce-Green-Ma/ODT1-0038.html . Confusion Factor #1: The given name associations of Earl "Waldo" Eastman and Earl's son " Reed" Eastman, in the Lewistown Montana branch of Charles and Lucy's descendents, STRONGLY suggest that he is Charles E. Eastman, b. 10 Feb 1821, a son of Joseph Eastman and Persis Reed. http://home.att.net/~george.eastman/index.htm http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=geastman&id=I18604 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=geastman&id=I32764 . Confusion Factor #2: Charles Eastman's death certificate, as recorded in Holland, Orleans County, VT, says that he lived for 62 y, 10 m, 21 d: i.e. born 15 Nov 1819 - died 05 Nov 1882, and that his father was CARLOS EASTMAN, and that his mother was CYRENE . ( To calculate the birth date goto: http://www.geditcom.com/DateCalc.html , (I used the Windows format) input 5 Nov 1882 in the #1 field, input 62 y, 10 m, 21 d in Time field, use the [#2= #1-time] function to calculate ) . INVESTIGATE: CARLTON EASTMAN / SERENA WALKER ? http://home.att.net/~george.eastman/index.htm http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=geastman&id=I38483 This Carlton Eastman / Serena Walker family appears to have the "given name" and "geographical" connection requisites, to be those persons who are referred to on Charles Eastman's death certificate, as being his parents. . However, there is apparently NO BIRTH RECORD known to date, for this Charles, as a son of Carlton and Serena, that would validate this connection. . Also complicating matters, is that Carlton and Serena's marriage date in 1825, as reflected in the data available from the http://home.att.net/~george.eastman/index.htm genealogy records, is some 5 to 6 years after Charles calculated date of birth in 1819 ? . Do you by any chance, have any additional data on this family in your records, that might help clarify this matter? . Thank you for your consideration, . Jack G. Hi Marilyn, Do you have any listing for Bates (Jacob, Phineas, Joseph C.) or John Milton Short and wife Lucy Lawton? There might have also been some Shattucks (Ephraim, Silas) Thank you for looking, M. McKinley
My line goes as follows: Hannah Kneeland (Solomon, John , John , John, John, Alexander. Daughter of Solomon Kneeland of Boston b. Boston April 10 1709. she married Ephraim Abbott of Andover, MA and they settled in Amherst, p. 478 and had eight children as follows: Ephraim Abbot b. at Amhurst Dec. 16, 1742 m. Dorothy Styles] Hannah Abbot b. March 12, 1745 at Amerst m. James Stattuck of Holis NH. KNEELAND ABBOTT b. Amherst May 17, 1748 m. Betsy Stanley of Vermont and had six children: Moses, Abiel, Betsy, Sarah, Mary, Jacob. That is my line and I am almost positive that they had another child not listed who was Abigail. I do have a "Warning Out" for the Kneeland Abbott family from VT and Abigail is listed as one of the children. Abigail married Eben Farnsworth and they are buried at Holden's Cemetery near Andover, VT. Also the earlier Ephraim Abbott of NH was on the Committee of Safety during the Revolution and his son Ephraim served in it also. It is rather confusing to say the least. I probably have some more information in my files if you are interested. Marilyn
Hello, The "History of Barnard VT", comp. William Monroe Newton, published by the Vermont Historical Society, 1928, does mention a Calvin Green, but says he was a son of Frederick Green and Levina Aikins and was b. ca. 1793. Frederick died in 1801 age 38. Newton says that there were a number of Greens in Barnard at that time whose relationship is unclear. In the 1790 census Frederick, Beriah and Charles Green were listed as heads of households; Arba Green was in Barnard in 1791, and Elijah Green was listed in the 1800 census. Perhaps there is a relationship between Cyrel and Frederick. I assume from your query that you know that Cyrel was of Bethel when he died in 1808, leaving no will. Edith Lillie Bartley [email protected] At 09:28 AM 11/1/2002 -0800, you wrote: >Would you please check your book for Cyrel and Submit >Green who may have been living in Bethel or Barnard from 1800-1808. Hello, Reading about the Abbott and Kneeland connection in Andover, MA, I thought perhaps I could add something by consulting my Andover records. Now I'm somewhat confused, but maybe some of the following will be helpful. There appear to have been several men named Ephraim Abbott alive in Andover MA at the same time. I say this for two reasons: first, the birth records show their births, and the death records do not show them to have died. And second, two men appear to have been fathering children simultaneously--the births occurring only a few months apart. I don't find a birth records for Ephraim Abbott on 1 August 1718, which is the date which was posted in the message, but I do find the birth of an Ephraim Abbott, son of Ephraim and Sarah on 22 July 1718. Perhaps the 1 August date was his baptism. An Ephraim Abbott married a widow, Sarah (____) Hunt of Billerica on 6 Jan. 1714-15. Perhaps this Ephraim and the widow are the parents of "your" Ephraim. There was another Ephraim Abbot, born in 1710 (exact date not in AVR), the son of Stephen and Sarah A. The disparity in age between the two Ephraims suggest which Ephraim married which woman. Looking in printed Andover MA Vital Records, I find the following marriages: Ephraim Abbott jr. m. Hannah Phelps 14 Feb. 1733-4 Ephraim Abbott jr. m. Mary Abbot 3 Nov. 1740 Ephraim Abbott and Mary Kneelan of Ipswich filed intentions of marriage on Feb. 1, 1745-6. The only applicable death records appear to be: Epharaham, 8 June 1748, a. abt. 64 y. Mary, w. Ephraim, 3d, 9 Mar. 1744-5 However, the birth record of an Abiel Abbott includes the death of the father, Ephraim, in April 1745. This Ephraim was married to Hannah. Looking at the above records, my guess is that the Ephraim born in 1710 married Hannah Phelps and then died in April 1745. And that the Ephraim born in 1718 married first Mary Abbot and married second Mary Kneeland. You appear to know that he subsequently had a wife named Hannah, which may be recorded in Amherst. Nothing in the Andover records. ------------------- Birth Records for Ephraim and Hannah: Hannah, d. Ephraim (jr. ch rec) and Hannah, 26 Dec. 1734 Mehetbel, d. Ephraim (jr ch rec) and Hannah, 11 Aug 1736 Sarah, d. Ephraim (jr ch rec) and Hannah, __ Nov. 1737 Ephraim, s. Ephraim jr and Hannah, 22 June 1739 (Note: Ephraim, son of Ephraim and Hannah, d. 19 Nov. 1739) Rhoda, d. Ephraim, jr. and Hannah, 22 June 1741 Ephraim, s. Ephraim (jr ch. rec) and Hannah, 8 May 1743 Hannah, d. Ephraim, 3d and Mary, 1 Mar. 1744-5 Abiel, d. [sic] Ephraim, jr ("who deceased this morning," ch bp. 14 Apr) and Hannah, 12 Apr 1745 --------------- Birth Records for Ephraim and Mary: Mary, d. Ephraim (3d ch rec) and Mary, 11 Mar 1740-41 Ephraim, s. Ephraim, 3d (jr. ch. rec.) and Mary 5 Dec. 1742 Hannah, d. Ephraim, 3d and Mary, 1 Mar. 1744-5 There is also a baptismal record for a Kneeland, son of Ephraim, jr, (mother's name not given) who was baptised on 22 May 1748. It doesn't say how old the child was at the time of baptism, but the only couple with a known (to me) Kneeland connection was Ephraim b. 1718 and his second wife, Mary Kneeland--according to my theories. Hope this is reasonably clear.
