I am searching for whatever happened to my ggg grandmother Lovina Severance Howe (b. 14 February 1824 in NY) after the death of her hubby Rhino Howe in June 1867. They resided in Tunbridge, Orange County, VT. After Rhino's death according to probate they lost everything. It was tragic enough because Rhino and her daughter died 4 days apart, and she was left with a mess of minor children. The last entries of the probate (both dated July 8, 1868) says....in one entry the monies were handed over to Lovina for the care of minor children...there is a breakdown...then there is an entry that states money is given to a Nathaniel King for the care of the minor children because he is their guardian...both have the same date but this makes no sense.... Was Lovina not capable of taking care of her kids? (does anybody have a list of the buried in the State Hospital in Windham, VT?) Did she have a breakdown? I can not find them in 1870. (Is there an index?) By 1880 some children are in Worcester, Mass. others in Chautauqua County, NY, my gg gram went to Washington County, VT, and at least one went to Atlanta GA. I have been unsuccessful in getting a death certificate in VT. Lovina does not show up anywhere in the 1880 FHC census index. However my g grams "old book" says that she died June 1883 and it has been pretty accurate. What happened to Lovina? Are there census indexes for MA, NY and VT for 1870?
