Metcalf, 72, of Griffin Hill, died Tuesday (Sept. 24, 1996) at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Mrs. Metcalf formerly worked at her father's woodworking mill in Gageville, Vt., and at a mill in Somerville, Mass. She was a former cook for Lebanon (N.H.) schools; a hardware store clerk in Lebanon; and had worked at the Book Press in Gilsum, N.H., at Brush Master in Keene, N.H.; at Murray Heel Co. in Walpole; and at Jan-Met Machine, with her husband, in Walpole. Mrs. Metcalf was an avid musician and played the accordion. She played with Woody and the Ramblers Band entertaining in the Connecticut River Valley for several years. She also entertained with her brothers for many years at area Grange meetings. Mrs. Metcalf was also a ballroom dancing instructor and roller skating competitor. She enjoyed canning and cooking wild game. Her jelly recipes were printed in the National Grange Magazine. Mrs. Metcalf was a longtime member of Pomona Grange in Saxtons River. She was born in South Royalton, Vt., on Aug. 18, 1924, the daughter of Raynold J. and Helen (Thayer) Cowing. She attended Gageville and Bellows Falls schools. On Aug. 12, 1955, she married Daniel Metcalf Jr. in Alstead. Survivors include her husband, Daniel Jr. of Alstead; three sons, Rooney Gibbs and Ronald Gibbs, both of Grafton, Vt., and Carl Gibbs of Enfield, N.H.; two brothers, Earl Cowing of North Westminster and Irwin Cowing of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren; two nephews; and one niece. She was predeceased by her first husband, Glen Gibbs. There are no calling hours. Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Bellows Falls. He was born Dec. 10, 1921, in South Royalton, son of Raynold J. and Helen (Thayer) Cowing. He graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1939. Mr. Cowing married Theresa Joslyn Cowing. Mr. Cowing worked in the family Riverside Dairy and family business of Maplecraft Manufacturing Co. in Westminster, retiring as shop manager from Cooperman Fife and Drum at Cowing's Mill in 1998. He was a member of the Fall Mountain Grange, the Saxtons River Valley Pomona Grange and the Vermont State Grange for a total of 50 years. His hobbies included candlepin bowler, horseshoes and skiing. Survivors include two sons, Richard Cowing of Wentworth, N.H., and Dennis Cowing of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother, Irwin Cowing of Fairfield, Ohio; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, who died in 1993. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the United Church in Bellows Falls by the Rev. Kaye Hult. Burial will follow in the Westminster Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fenton and Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.
