Florence, Can't help you directly but wonder if my Thurber's are connected down the line. I have: Emerson H. Thurber b 1838 Vermont, listed in the 1870 census under Marlboro, Windham Co., VT and the 1880 census under Halifax, Windham Co., VT. He married in 1864 and had 6 children from 1865-1875 named George, Norton, Clarence, Mary, Lestina, Mabel. I have no parents for him as I am only connected through his wife. Good luck, Larry email me at [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Florence Gargaro [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 08, 2002 08:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [VTWINDHA] Hardin/Harden Thurber's wives? Hi, I am new to this list, and am looking for information on Harden/Hardin/Harding Thurber. He was b. in Rehoboth MA 13 Nov 1760 but went to Vermont and appears in 1790 census in Brattleboro, unmarried. I have read reports of a marriage both to Lucinda Cune and to Lydia Baker. These marriages took place in Brattleboro. One may have been in 1793 and another in 1811. I also have seen a cemetery report of the death of Lucinda , wife of Hardin Thurber on 30 March 1809 at age 42. I believe this was from West Brattleboro Cemetery Association, VT page 23 line 338. His children were Elvira b. 1799, Lydia Baker b. 1803, Lucinda Elizabeth b. 1809, James Harden b. 1813, and Phoebe Barret b. 1815. One would assume that Lydia Baker Thurber b. 1803 would have been the dau. of Lydia, and that Lucinda Elizabeth would have been the dau. of Lucinda Cune. However, if Lucinda was the 2nd wife, then who was the mother of the last 2 children? She died before they were born. Does anyone know which marriage occurred first and if there was a third marriage? Harden died 19 Apr. 1822. Hi Larry, Only an indirect relationship here. I actually have Emerson Henry Thurber b.11 April 1841 in Halifax, Windham Co. VT. This seems to agree with his age (39)on 1880 census. There was also a 7th child, Freeman Henry Thurber b. 29 Jul 1874 in Marlboro VT. Freeman d. 15 Aug 1874, also in Marlboro. Emerson's line goes back to the first persons to use the name Thurber, John and Priscilla Thurber . Beginning with Emerson and working back, it is Emerson, Barnabas, Edward, Davis, Jonathan, James, John. Harden Thurber's line was Harden, James, Samuel, James John. So their closest Thurber relative was James Thurber, a few generations earlier. >I have no parents for him as I am only connected through his wife. If you ever decide you want the information on the Thurber line, I can provide it in detail :-) Maybe you can provide me with a bit more on his wife Sarah. I have her name as Sarah B. Ballou, daughter of Almon Ballou and Sarah Houghton, and that she was b. 29 Jul 1844 in Halifax VT. If that is true, then I believe Almon was a brother to Hosea Ballou, first President of Tufts College. Do you know if this connection is correct? Do you have Sarah's middle name? I have seen Blendena, but that is not a name I am familiar with. Florence
For all you people who are researching Emerson Thurber (I am not, I just belong to Ancestry.com and looked him up), you will find the following info about him. Emerson applied for a Civil War pension. You may want to check NARA to see what is in his pension files. Ancestry lists him as Emerson H. Thurber, wife Sarah B. Thurber, F16 VT Infantry. Hope that helps you. Ruthie
