    3. In the mid to late 1940's I walked to school and every day I passed a sign nailed to a tree on Maple Street in Springfield, MA that read: "Here in 1836 Alonzo Phillips made the first friction match in America". This came from the Internet. In 1836 in the United States, Alonzo D. Phillips of Springfield, Massachusetts, obtained a patent for "manufacturing of friction matches" and called them locofocos. Bob

Surnames: PHILLIPS / FILLMORE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2AC.2ACI/1599 Message Board Post: Need to ask for help please, in finding my great grandfather's parents names, to continue my research of his ancestry; Alonzo Phillips; b. 1809-1810. His childrens death records list his birthplace in Bennington, VT. Unknown if it was Town of Bennington or a Town in Bennington County? Have exhausted my leads of Phillips's in Town of Bennington and believe his family may have moved to several locations, before removing to Jefferson Co., NY. He was first known to be in Rural Hill, Township of Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., NY., in 1830. He m. Lavinia Fillmore 1831 in Ellisburg. She was a daughter of Ethni and Eunice (Colgrove) Fillmore of Middletown, Rutland County, VT. Ethni, son of Luther Fillmore, moved his family to Ellisburg in 1816. The 1830 Census of Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., NY., lists a Joshua Phillips and Oran Phillips living on each side of Ethni Fillmore! (census shown on Roll 92 Book 1, pg.49). Have so far been unsuccessful in proving a family connection of Joshua and/or Oran Phillips to my great grandfather, Alonzo Phillips, or to other Phillips's in the area. Alonzo and Lavinia Phillips had ten children. One of their sons, Millard Phillips, was my grandfather. Alonzo Phillips d. 1858, age 49 in Ellisburg. Lavinia Fillmore Phillips remarried in 1860 to Silas Farmer of Lorraine, NY. She d. 1895 in Henderson, NY., age 81. (a hand written copy of her Obit may be seen on the Jefferson County, New York Message Board, posted on 22 Feb 2005; Subj: Obit of Lavinia Fillmore Phillips Farmer, 1895 / Henderson, NY.) The Fillmore family has been well documented, but I have no information of my Phillips line, past my great grandfather, Alonzo Phillips. I would be grateful to hear from any PHILLIPS researchers out there, that may possibly share a connection to him in their family tree. Hoping to find that missing link! Thank you. 2. Joann H. Nichols
    3. Has anyone researched the Pierce families that lived in Putney and Westminster, Windham County, VT? They seem to have appeared in that area in the 1780s. The line I am researching is a Charles Pierce/Peirce who seems to have come from Royalston, Worcester Co., MA. He received a pension as a result of his service in the Rev. War. He was married in Putney in 1782 to Lucy Pierce. The 1790, 1800, and 1810 censuses have him in Westminster; then in 1820 he is in Charlestown, Clark County, IN. I would like to discover the parents of Charles and Lucy (they may have been cousins?), as well as names of any children. The only child I'm sure of is Charles, Jr. who was married to Diadiami (spelling?). Need her last name. Thanks for any suggestions and help you can give me. Joann Nichols
