When in doubt, I always check Thompson's Gazetteer of Vermont. Here is an excerpt from the description of Newfane, written in 1824: "The town is watered by West river, "South branch," Smith's brook, Baker's brook, besides numerous rivulets. West river has its origin in Weston, and, after passing through the towns of Londonderry, Jamaica, Townshend, and the easterly part of Newfane and Dummerston unites with the Connecticut at Brattleborough. The "South Branch" originates in Dover, and after receiving a number of tributary streams, passes through the southerly part of Newfane from west to east, and falls into West river, on the east line of said town. This stream affords many valuable mill seats and water privileges. Smith's Brook affords some eligible mill seats.....There are two small villages, in this town; one of which is in the centre, and the other upon the "South branch." The south village is favourably situated as to water privileges, and will probably be a place of considerable business." Sorry! I had forgotten about Baker Brook which one crosses via a one-way covered bridge in the town of Williamsville. But South Newfane is beyond that bridge. Windham Regional Commission has been mapping all the towns in this county. Here's the PDF road map online for Newfane. Perhaps this will help answer your question. http://www.rpc.windham.vt.us/gis/roadname/newfane.pdf
Hi, Janet: From what I can see on TopoZone, the West River runs north to south along the east side of the Town, for a ways forming the boundary with Brookline. The Rock River runs through the south part of Newfane, from west to east. Does this help? Hi there, County records folks in Vermont will tell you the towns are the best source on vital records. The state has some, but I believe they are not as complete as the town records. The LDS church has filmed the town records extensively, which can be accessed at their Family History Centers throughout the nation. One not need be a member of the LDS church to access them. Many would have to be ordered from the main office in Salt Lake City, Utah for a nominal fee, which may require a wait of a couple of weeks. Go to www.familysearch.org for more information on the Family History Center near you. I'm not a member of the LDS church, but am grateful for the good service they have provided me. The LDS films also include copies of wills. The website will allow you to look up a particular town. Be sure to spell out the state Vermont. Martha Parker
