    2. Hello and thank you, Howard Minch, Is there any chance that Charles Marchant could lead me to records of marriages in Jamaica? I've never checked out the marriage of Samuel Stephen Perry and Martha Mahala Wilkins, supposedly occurring there May 17, 1860. These are my great grand parents. Thanks, Martha Parker

Also, Cumberland County originated out of Albany County New york /so if Ephraim's family was there that early, records are either not recorded or not well documented, etc., or divided geographically (before borders were formulated) Windham County was formed (1781) out of Cumberland and this was before the time Jerusha was born

    2. Jerusha Whitney: This is a family that moved to Vermont early; perhaps your Jerusha is related to this group? It is one of the families "Most Wanted" on the research of this grouping from MA to NH or VT http://www.whitneygen.org/families/unconnw/benjaminw.html a quote of the first paragraph is here: Capt. Benjamin Whitney - Most Wanted by Colleen Knights > > >> Captain Benjamin Whitney lived most of his adult life in Westminster, >> Windham Co., VT. His marriage to Jerusha Brockway, daughter of Wolston and Anna >> (Brooks) Brockway, is certain. Though no record of this legal bond has been >> found, a Petition for Alimony was heard on August 1, 1809 at Newfane in >> Windham County, Vermont. Benjamin "Wheetney" was amongst those who petitioned Governor Wentworth > >> to form the new town of Surry in Cheshire Co., NH on July 4, 1768, >> proposing to join the westerly part of Gilsum and the northeasterly part of >> Westmoreland. History of Surry indicates that Benjamin Whitney was of the >> Westmoreland leg. This petition was granted, and on March 9, 1769 the Charter of >> Surry was issued. >> >> >> > As another hint, I don't have Hemenway's Gazetteer of Vermont but she does list family surnames and what counties they appeared in early in VT. If I had a copy I would look up Whitney for you. j

    1. Grafton records available through your local FHC
    2. Folks, Sorry- the previous version of this email was a little confusing because of the interjection of URL addresses- here is the cleaned up version. Much information about Grafton is available through your local LDS Family History Center (FHC). You can order films of Grafton records through them (typically a $3.25 fee per film to cover costs) then look at the films using the film readers at the Center. I checked listings for Grafton at familysearch.org and the following general listings show: _Vermont, Windham, Grafton - Archives and libraries - Inventories, registers, catalogs_ _Vermont, Windham, Grafton - History_ _Vermont, Windham, Grafton - Land and property_ _Vermont, Windham, Grafton - Maps_ _Vermont, Windham, Grafton - Town records_ _Vermont, Windham, Grafton - Vital records_ The land and property records are mostly the deed records. The film covering the deeds for the time frame you are interested in is Index to deeds, 1781-1952 -- Deeds, v. 1-2, 1781-1794 FHL US/CAN Film 28286 The index which is at the front of this particular film will likely show all the deed transactions that your GGGgrandfather was involved in. The back part of the film shows the deeds for the time frame you are interested in (1787). If the index is set up like most indices in this part of Vermont, you will want to look at both the grantor index and the grantee index to pick up all the transactions that may involve your GGGgrandfather. Other people of the same surname may also occur in these records and may be relatives of your GGGgrandfather. You can determine where the closest FHC is to your home by going to familysearch.org and then click on the second item down in the right hand column. This will give you a page that you fill out to find the nearest FHC to your location. BTW, the Grafton town and vital records films alluded to above may also show whether your GGGgrandfather was involved as a town officer, may show his tax records, may give records of births, marriages, and deaths within his family, and much other interesting info. Good searching! Jim Otton Lakewood, Colorado FHC

    3. I believe the original name of Grafton was "Tomlinson". Land records for Windham County, Vermont townships reside with the town clerks. [Except for some from the grants period when the area was Cumberland County, New York] The year 1787 should be on file in Grafton. Good luck in your search.
