You could try having the DAR look him up at the url below: if he is a "patriot" you'll get a brief history of his service. In general the period for which the DAR considers service is 19 April 1775 (Battle of Lexington) and 26 November 1783 (withdrawal of British Troops from New York). Certainly birth in 1800 would appear to disqualify him. Look-up url http://www.dar.org/natsociety/pi_lookup.cfm If you can't figure out why the marker from reading the DAR's response to your look-up request, you could call the state chapter of the DAR and ask them why they placed the marker. bwstephens@hotmail.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2AC.2ACI/1642 > > Message Board Post: > > Recently found the Tombstone of ancestor (David E. Nov. 19, 1813, in Guilford, Vt. Ann, b. Aug. 24, 1820, in Leyden, Mass. George, b. April 22, 1825, in Leyden, Mass.; died young. James Mowry was the youngest son of John Mowry, who died of apoplexy, when James was sixteen years of age. Previous to the death of John, he had "paid off," as James used to say, his older boys, and had intended that James should live at home, as he was the youngest, and inherit the homestead. As no charges were made against such as had been paid, and no will or deed was made, the law took the property and made an equal division to all the legal heirs. James, therefore, went as apprentice to the tanning, currying, and shoemaking trade. About the time he was of age, he was married to Lydia Webster, and took up his residence in the southern part of Guilford, Vt. Here he bought a house, built a tannery and shoemaker's shop, and worked at his trade for ten or fifteen years. At this place most of his family were born, and while living here, he and his wife embraced religion, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. His house from that time became a home for all itinerant Methodist ministers who came into that circuit. Though in indigent circumstances, he was an uprightman, respected by the community in which he lived, a good husband, an excellent father, and a consist ent Christian. From about 1818 he was a farmer, residing first in Leyden, Mass., and afterwards in Guilford, Vt. He was of a cheerful disposition, always happy when surrounded by his friends, especially those of his own family. He died at the home of his son-in-law, Horace W. Linde, and was interred in the public ground, in Guilford, Vt., where a stone is erected to his memory.

Hello, Christine, I'm looking for a Lucy Russell, supposedly born 1798, who married Joseph Collins, born Ira, Rutland County,VT in 1796. Marriage possibly took place 1815 in Hoosick Falls, Rensselaer County, NY. Their daughter, Julia Arabella Collins was supposedly born 1816 in Whitingham, Windahm County, VT. I'm not aware of any French-Canadian connection. Martha Parker

Wow, that's great. I know she married a Daniel Bennett Dec. 6 1826 in Putney Windham Vermont. I have on a few censuses that Lorinda Bennett was born in Mass, but I also have read where she was born in Vermont. I have looked on an old map and there is an ALLYN either creek or road in Windham county. I have often wondered if there could have been a misspelling. In contacting Historical society in Vt they recommended also looking in NH. They end up in Cambridge, Middlesex, Mass...city directories and census to varify after 1857 and were buried there. Daniel and Lorinda had a son born 20th Dec. 1836 in Putney, Windham, VT. My source for name is the Goodspeed Lawrence county missouri I am on my way to work, so appologize for the briefness and haste. I have a photo of her, and a bit more info...but not much more. Also possible child born in vermont is Julia Bennett between 1826 and 1836. Look forward to hearing from you.
