    1. [VTWINDHA] Stafford HORTON
    2. Jack Pettee
    3. Hi All, Can anyone help me find more information on Stafford HORTON of Guilford and Wilmington? Here is what I do know - Stafford was b. 1746 in MA to Hezekiah HORTON and Mary "Martin" HORTON. Hezekiah Horton was part of a Baptist migration from Rehoboth, MA to Guilford, VT. Stafford married Eunice ??, I know not where. The couple had at least one daughter, Mehitable, who married George A. PETTEE September 06, 1796 at the Congregational Church Wilmington, VT. George's brother Silas PETTEE married Anna HORTON August 07, 1797 also in Wilmington, VT. It is believed that Stafford and Eunice had a daughter Elizabeth Horton b. bef. 1774 of Guilford m. 21 July 1790 John Scovill. This marriage shows in VT VR's. It is well documented that Stafford was of Wilmington by 1793. I am trying to find if the marriage of Stafford to Eunice took place in Guilford, names of any children born to the couple and where. Stafford is my 4th great grandfather and while I know for sure Mehitable was his daughter I know very little else. Any and all help appreciated, Jack Pettee Researching Surnames: PETTEE, MORTON, BEATTY, SINNOTT and HORTON Visit the Pettee family at: http://www.theramp.net/railroad/family/index.htm

    1. [VTWINDHA] Re: James Hayward and Lois Parmenter
    2. Mr. Arlen Huesman in his posting provides evidence to support his belief that James Albee married Hannah Parmenter and that Hannah was not James Hayward's second wife as is incorrectly recorded in the Mendon VR. Here I show that proof that Lois Parmenter is the mother of the children of James Hayward which are sometimes assigned to Hannah is in the Mendon MA Vital Records for births. The supposed marriage of James Hayward and Hannah Parmenter would be on 26 Feb 1754. However, the following is in the VR for Hayward births: Martha, d. James and Lois, Aug 4. 1754 Solomon, s. of James and Lois, Dec 6, 1756 Rebeckah, d. of James and Lois, July 23, 1758 Joseph, s. of James and Lois, Aug. 24, 1760 Uriel, s. of James and Lois, Mar. 1, 1763 Thus, whoever Hannah Parmenter married in 1754 it certainly was not James Hayward. Arleen Huesman makes a good case that it is James Albee. I hope this clarifies the issue. --- Robert Lincoln

    1. [VTWINDHA] Re: ELIAS CROW (CROWELL?) Additional 1800 census information, Windham Co. VT, Rockingham (town)
    2. The 1800 census information when I submitted my 11 July query, was from census index.Today I received the following information from the census itself. The household members were: 2 males b. 1790-1800; 3 males b. 1784-1790; 2 males b. 1774-1784; 1 male b. before 1755; 1 female b. 1790-1800; 2 females b. 1784-1790; 1 female b. 1774-1784; 1 female b. 1755-1774. *My ancestor was born about 1789, and his older brother was born about 1783, so they would both fit in as sons in this family.PLEASE HELP ME FIND INFORMATION ON THIS ELIAS CROW (or Crowell) family who was in Rockingham VT 1800. An Elias Crow or Crowell was present when my ancestor married in Herkimer, NY 1810. Does anyone have VITAL RECORDS on members of this family when they lived at Rockingham? I can't tell you how happy I would be to get more information.

    1. Re: [VTWINDHA] ELIAS CROW (CROWELL?) 1800 census Windham Co. VT, Rockingham
    2. You will notice from the little vignette below that there was a Levi Crowell in the 'west parish' of Westminster, Windham Co., VT. around 1800. Possibly a relative. He is said to be part of a group that came from Cape Cod. There would be more information in the history of the West Parish, but I don't know that it has been transcribed. Regards, Charlie Jefferson Woodbridge, VA 22192 ----------------------------------------- In 1797, there was a Congregational Church in Athens. She reports in the Consociation only once, -- September 25th, 1798, by the name of Rev. Joseph BULLEN, a former minister of this church, who, after leaving this church, served in Athens for a few years in the treble office of minister, farmer and miller. This church never reports herself after 1799. Probably what few members there were became connected with the church in the West Parish in Westminster, which was formed in that year. The families from which this church was formed, were, first, the children of the early families of this part of this town, who seemed to have had the "Western fever," enough to carry then as far as the West Parish. Among these were the two sons of your first deacon, Ephraim RANNEY; Elijah and Ephraim, and a William RANNEY of another family, Aaron GOULD and his brother, Abiel CARPENTER, and Levi HARLOW. Secondly, the GOODELLS: -- Asahel and Edward, and a relative of the same name, from Ashfield, Conn., then Mendon. Ephraim WILCOX from the same State. Thirdly, the HITCHCOCKS, Heli, Eldad, Elisha and Zadock, from Brimfield, Mass. Fourthly, Ebenezer GOODHUE, son of the first minister of Putney. Fifthly, Capt. Robert MILLER and the TUTHILLS from Long Island. Sixthly, about the year 1795, the emigration from Cape Cod to the parish that began, led by Atherton HALL, Esq., with his two sons, Atherton and Peter, then married men; followed soon by Matthias GORHAM, with his five sons, -- Isaac, Matthias 2d, David, William and James. Levi CROWELL, Elisha BARRY, Joseph HAMBLIN, the HALLETS, HOWES and GIDEONS. These families, with their sons which I have mentioned, had daughters to match. They soon paired off, and by a law of progress sacredly regarded in those days, multiplied on a fearful ratio. Every nook and corner of the parish was soon full. There was a house in almost every place were the soil was deep enough for a cellar, as may be seen by passing over the sheep pastures on the ridge that divides Westminster from Brookline and Athens. The church was full every Sabbath. The school house in the parish were crowded. It is said three families sent thirty scholars one day and had a large reserve force at home."

    2. Karima
    3. Good Morning All, After almost one month of computer problems (with my "new" computer), I "think" the problems have been resolved . . . long story . . . That is the good news. The bad news is that in the process I lost all of my email files and my address book . . . What this means, in terms of the Vermont Web Site, is that anything that has not already been uploaded to the site, has been lost. So, if any of you sent me photos, bios, whatever, for the site AND it has not appeared on the site yet . . . please resend the information to me - at your leisure. Sorry for the hassle, but I really would like to include all of the wonderful photos, bios, stories, etc. that you all so graciously sent to me. If the information you sent is on line, then you do not have to resend it, as those files are ok. You can check it here, at your leisure: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/VERMONTGATEWAY.html I apologize to those of you who will receive this message more than once . . . :-) Thanks for your help, Karima
