Hi! I'm doing some family research and would love to hear from anyone who might have common ancestors with me! Before she died, my grandma left me the following information about her family: Her grandmother, Mary Hassett, was born in County Clare, Ireland, and came to New York as a young girl, with her twin brother. No dates are known. I'd say she was born in the 1860s. The twins got separated after finding work. Mary married Patrick Farrell, born in Wexford County, Ireland around 1860. They lived in northern NY and then moved to Bellows Falls, Vermont. Their children were: Mame, Jane Ellen (born 1883), Patrick, Will, James, and another daughter (name unknown) who died at the age of 12. Patrick and Mary died in the Bellows Falls area. My grandma (Jane's daughter) said that she still had distant cousins in the Bellows Falls area. Jane had eventually moved with her family to California. Thanks! For those of you who were interested in the posting of Emerson Thurber and wife, Sally, at genealogylibrary.com ( a paid subscription service) there are 2 books that have some notes about Sarah "Sally" Ballou. Please note that I am not researching either family. This is just to help those who are. 1. My records show that Emerson Henry Thurber enlisted 4 Sep 1863, and the following 23rd Oct. was mustered into Co. F 16th VT Vol. Reg. He was wounded in the face by explosion of a shell. This caused him total deafness in his left ear and partial deafness in the right. He enlisted for nine months and was discharged 10 Aug 1863. He was a prosperous farmer of considerable learning, and highly respected. Although this is not my Thurber line, I have information on his line and on many other Thurbers. I have an interest in Thurber genealogy in general, and am happy to share my information with anyone interested in that surname. Florence Thurber Gargaro
For all you people who are researching Emerson Thurber (I am not, I just belong to Ancestry.com and looked him up), you will find the following info about him. Emerson applied for a Civil War pension. You may want to check NARA to see what is in his pension files. Ancestry lists him as Emerson H. Thurber, wife Sarah B. Thurber, F16 VT Infantry. Hope that helps you. Ruthie

Hi Larry, Only an indirect relationship here. I actually have Emerson Henry Thurber b.11 April 1841 in Halifax, Windham Co. VT. This seems to agree with his age (39)on 1880 census. There was also a 7th child, Freeman Henry Thurber b. 29 Jul 1874 in Marlboro VT. Freeman d. 15 Aug 1874, also in Marlboro. Emerson's line goes back to the first persons to use the name Thurber, John and Priscilla Thurber . Beginning with Emerson and working back, it is Emerson, Barnabas, Edward, Davis, Jonathan, James, John. Harden Thurber's line was Harden, James, Samuel, James John. So their closest Thurber relative was James Thurber, a few generations earlier. >I have no parents for him as I am only connected through his wife. If you ever decide you want the information on the Thurber line, I can provide it in detail :-) Maybe you can provide me with a bit more on his wife Sarah. I have her name as Sarah B. Ballou, daughter of Almon Ballou and Sarah Houghton, and that she was b. 29 Jul 1844 in Halifax VT. If that is true, then I believe Almon was a brother to Hosea Ballou, first President of Tufts College. Do you know if this connection is correct? Do you have Sarah's middle name? I have seen Blendena, but that is not a name I am familiar with. Florence
PS- Your Laura Wells, by the way, is descended from a large bunch of early New Englanders, who are very fascinating, and several Kings of England, and Charlemagne. It is all in fryfam, and pretty well documented. Where I make guesses and assumptions, I point that out. Have fun! Yes, some of it is quite familiar. I am descended from Daniel Wells II and Lucy Fuller, through their son Nelson, and his daughter, Laura Anne Wells, coincidentally. Your Laura Wells, dau. of Daniel II, is not in my line. You can see my Wells and Fullers at rootsweb, database fryfam. You should post your query on the Rock Island Wells list- there are people subscribing to that list who know every single Wells ever born. Florence, Can't help you directly but wonder if my Thurber's are connected down the line. I have: Emerson H. Thurber b 1838 Vermont, listed in the 1870 census under Marlboro, Windham Co., VT and the 1880 census under Halifax, Windham Co., VT. He married in 1864 and had 6 children from 1865-1875 named George, Norton, Clarence, Mary, Lestina, Mabel. I have no parents for him as I am only connected through his wife. Hi, I am new to this list, and am looking for information on Harden/Hardin/Harding Thurber. He was b. in Rehoboth MA 13 Nov 1760 but went to Vermont and appears in 1790 census in Brattleboro, unmarried. I have read reports of a marriage both to Lucinda Cune and to Lydia Baker. These marriages took place in Brattleboro. One may have been in 1793 and another in 1811. I also have seen a cemetery report of the death of Lucinda , wife of Hardin Thurber on 30 March 1809 at age 42. I believe this was from West Brattleboro Cemetery Association, VT page 23 line 338. His children were Elvira b. 1799, Lydia Baker b. 1803, Lucinda Elizabeth b. 1809, James Harden b. 1813, and Phoebe Barret b. 1815. One would assume that Lydia Baker Thurber b. 1803 would have been the dau. of Lydia, and that Lucinda Elizabeth would have been the dau. of Lucinda Cune. However, if Lucinda was the 2nd wife, then who was the mother of the last 2 children? She died before they were born. Does anyone know which marriage occurred first and if there was a third marriage? Harden died 19 Apr. 1822. A shot in the dark is that William Perrin Mascroft's mother's maiden name might be Perrin (maybe French Canadian?), and her father might be William Perrin. Again, this could be a long shot. My great aunt Josephine Peterson BARCLAY was married to the Reverend George GELLATLY(GALLETY)(GALLETLY) who was a minister in a church in Newfane, Windham County, Vermont. She was born 29 May, 1885 at Jordan River, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, Canada and married George GELLATLY in June of 1916 at the home of her sister, Alma Leah BARCLAY (Mrs. William C. CURRY) in Framington, Massachusetts. They had two sons, George b. 1918 and John. She died 19th January, 1935 or 1936 in Newfane where she had been a teacher. Does anyone remember Josephine and/or George in Newfane? Does anyone know the name of the church of which he was the minister or the name of the school in which she taught? Is there anyone who had her for a teacher or went to the church of which he was the minister? Was there a minister's house in which they lived in Newfane? Thank you in advance. Betty, if you do find someone who will look up the 1800 and 1810 censuses of Windham County will you let me know as I am urgently looking for my Wheelers and Clarks there in those censuses. Thanks alot. [email protected]
If anyone has access to the 1800 and 1810 U.S. Census of Windham County, VT, I could really use your assistance. I need any information given in those two census records regarding the families of DANIEL FISHER and of his adult son, SIMON FISHER. I believe both were living in the town of Newfane, Windham Co. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Betty Clingman Louisiana

I don't believe there were any Pikes in Stratton or Somerset in the 1790 census. There were Pikes in Whitingham in 1790, who were probably progenitors for most of the Pikes in Windham county. Leonard & Susannah Sprague Pike had a very large family. Moved to Whitingham from Franklin County, MA. Some then moved on to NY, but a number stayed in Windham County. I am still at the stage of collecting census data through the 1800's, and haven't really begun building the families. I'd be interested in anything you are able to share on the subject.
