In 1849-50 we passed in Wallingford two of the happiest years of a somewhat uneventful life, never since over and above adorned with hollyhocks and sunflowers. During the changing vicissitudes of more than thirty years, we had lost trace of most of the good fellows we knew and esteemed in those far away days, but whose memory yet lingers pleasantly and now and again returns to us as musically as came back to Father Prout the mellow notes of "The Bells of Shandon" Jolly Jone(?) Lernard, Gib and Charley Rustin, the Sabin boys, Norm Townsend, Steve, Joe and Tom Conley, Alfon and Steve Stafford, Harry Kelley and Bill Ballou, Honest John Moon and his brother Martin across the creek and others we might enumerate. Some no doubt have long since crossed to the other shore; others perhaps are yet lingering by the old hearth stones and many probably fighting life's battles on distant and busier fields, but good fellows all wherever their tents may be pitched. Wallingford was noted in those days for the friendliness and sociability of its people, and it is not surprising that her absent children, wherever the billows of destiny may cast them together should combine to perpetutate the inherited qualities of that good old burgh. We congratulate the Wallingford colony in Fair Haven on their numbers and respectability, and wish them many pleasant reunions.
