Rutland Herald. Fatal Accident. Michael McKairns, a resident of this town, and an employee of one of the gravel trains of the Rutland & Burlington railroad, took a gravel train at Brandon, on Monday last, to visit some of his children in Pittsford. After going about a mile from Brandon and while standing on the end of one of the cars near the brake, he fell upon the track and was run over and instantly killed. He was an Irishman who leaves a wife and five or six children. It is said he was under the influence of liquor when he fell from the car. [Tried to match this name to an individual in the census, but found no McKairns in Rutland in 1860 or 1870. However, there was a Michael McKearney, Irish, with a wife and six children in Pittsford in 1860, gone in 1870. A Pat McKearin, 19, lived in Pittsford in 1870, however, and is the right age to be the child listed as Pat McKearney in 1860. The Rutland Herald frequently misspelled names, as did the census. I just include it here as a possible match in case it is of interest to anyone.] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
