Wendy, I noticed your post from January asking about the murder of Carrie Goodwin in 1888, which you had read about in Dr. John M. Currier's scrapbook at the historical society. Actually the child's death occurred Sept 22, 1883, not 1888. I don't have access to the Rutland accounts, but the story is mentioned in several papers in other parts of the country, though not the full details or follow up. However, perhaps the more accurate date will help you follow up: New York Times Sept 23, 1883 A Mysterious Tragedy An Unknown Man Shoots a Woman and Kills Her Child Troy, N.Y., Sept 22 - A startling and mysterious tragedy occurred last night about midnight at Heron (sic) Goodwin's pleasure resort near the bridge at Lake Bomoson, Castleton, Vt. While the men of the house were out on the lake fishing, leaving young Mrs. Goodwin and her child alone, an unknown man fired at the woman through the window. The shot missed her, and she ran to where he child was on the bed, when the assassin entered and fired two mor shots, killing the child. Thinking he had killed the mother, the fellow ran off, but Mrs. Goodwin was not injured. The assassin is unknown, and no motive can be ascribed, as Mrs. Goodwin is a young woman universally loved. A strong force is on the murderer's track, and it is thought he will be captured. Oshkosh Northwestern (Oshkosh, Wisc.) Sept 25, 1883 A Baby Shot in Bed A child eleven months old, daughter of Theron Goodwin, Jr., of Castleton, was shot dead in the bed with its mother. The mother claims that an hour before a shot was fired at her through the window, and later someone entered the room and killed the baby. Stephens Point Journal (Steven's Point, Wisc.) Sept 29, 1883 An infant child of Theron Goodwin, Jr., of Castleton, Vermont, was killed in the arms of its mother, by a shot fired through the window. Ohio Democrat (New Philadelphia, Ohio) Oct. 4, 1883 The arrest for murder of Mrs. Goodwin, of Castleton, Vt., who recently reported that her child was killed in her arms by an assassin firing through the window, was reported on the 24th. (Note: I don't know the results of Mrs. Goodwin's arrest, but in 1900 Theron S. Goodwin, age 39, and his wife Nora, age 36, were living in Hubbardton. They had been married 19 years and had 2 sons, born about 1887 and 1892. A third child had died.) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
