This man was a veteran of the Civil War - a member of the 104th Ohio infantry. (I have written a short history of this regiment) Oscar Sterl was Captain of Co. A and eventually rose through promotion to be Colonel of the regiment. As the mortally rate during the civil war was so high, late in the war he assumed command of the brigade in which the 104th was attached. Almost immediately after the war ended he relocated to Rutland -- the reason why is unknown to me. There in Rutland he was married to Elizabeth Porter, daughter of local physician Cyrus Porter. Oscar lived the life of a farmer at least through 1880 when the federal census was taken.
