The atrocities were found out by a neighbor who was aroused by the girl's cries and visited the house. Her feet were blistered, Mrs. White having compelled her to stand on a red-hot stove until it was unbearable. One mode of punishment was to thrust pins through her ears and fasten her to the wall. Another, driving a needle through her tongue and tacking it to the window sill. The pair were arrested and received only a slight fine. Next night masked men visited the house, beat White, and ordered him to leave town. (1880 census gives name as Ida Ferry, living with Joseph and Addie White in Wallingford.)
