William Sumner, aged 36, died in the Rutland hospital Tuesday night, where he had been taken following a peculiar accident in the Jones quarry a mile north of Castleton. With other workmen, Mr. Sumner was at work on a bench on the side of the quarry when a rubbish box, suspended from the cable, swung near them. In pushing it away his glove caught in the box and he was carried off the bench and into mid-air, where he hung suspended for a few seconds and then dropped fifty feet to the bottom of the pit. Men rushed to his side and found him unconscious, and called Dr. Edward R. Clark of Castleton, who gave him first aid and he was rushed to the hospital. one thigh was fractured, an arm was broken, there were many serious cuts about his head and face, besides terrible body bruises and internal injuries. The unfortunate man leaves a wife and several children. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby
