Though there are aspects of this stuff that still confuse me -- like why all the land sales and purchases as recorded in the Town Deed Books don't seem to be reflected in the Grand Lists and other tax assessment books. People seem to be buying and selling land all the time, yet their taxable real estate seems to remain constant over time. Maybe there was a town ordinance that newly acquired real estate wouldn't be taxed for a number of years. Or that it had to be physically occupied for X number of years to be taxed. Or something. I just don't know, and didn't have time to go through all the Town Reports to check. The Castleton Town Clerk didn't know either. But there seems to be a disconnect between the tax lists and the town deeds. Oh well, more puzzles, more digging.
