What a dope I am. Of course, people are borrowing money. Credit in lieu of banks. But then how do we distinguish between actual transfers of property and this lending/borrowing? I suppose by looking at the grand lists! Holy smokes. Thank you for your dead-on response, that explains a lot. This is my first time working with these kinds of land records and the fact is I've found them pretty confusing. Thanks too for the reference to a resource I should've been familiar with.
